Exploring Life & Business with Jesse Ashenfelter of Ash Tattoo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Ashenfelter.

Hi Jesse, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2021, I volunteered for a combat deployment in the middle-east. While overseas I decided to spend downtime learning how to tattoo. Once I got back to Rochester, MN, I quickly met James Keller, owner of Keller Tattoo. If it wasn’t for him giving me the chance and this amazing opportunity to be his apprentice. I wouldn’t be where I am today. If you ask him- he may say “ I showed up one day at his shop and just didn’t leave until he finally gave me a tattoo apprenticeship. Regardless of how this all started. Truly feels like a blessing to go to work, love my job, and have a boss who is more of a role model than a boss.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There have been a few struggles or doubts I’ve had along the way however; they were all are self-created. As I mentioned before, James Keller has been a role model to me. Gave me great advice and it truly came down to me needing to believe in myself. During my first month of being an apprentice, I was fully booked. Moving into month two ( November ) and I’m already getting appointments scheduled out in December! Things have been great!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Ash Tattoo?
I love black and grey tattoos! Keller tattoo is well known for his (clean line work) and that is something I am working on perfecting as well! I do enjoy working with color. That is something I have been working on. Since I’m still an apprentice, my shop minimum is 60$. As I am progressing and already almost halfway through my apprenticeship, I would say what ends up happening when it comes to my proudest work is always my last tattoo. What sets James Keller and me apart from others tattoo studios is the atmosphere and experience you get when you come in for your tattoo. What he has created is something incredible. I strive to give my clients the same experience

What’s next?
Plan for the future is to become well-known for giving amazing tattoos.
