Exploring Life & Business with Johanna O’Malley of Mustard Seed Market

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna O’Malley.

Hi Johanna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.

I founded Mustard Seed Market, a vintage-inspired home and lifestyle boutique, in the charming downtown area of Lindstrom, MN in November of 2025. I’ve called Lindstrom home for over 20 years with my husband, Mike and our three children Luke, Leo and Eve. Our love of this small town and the close-knit community is the reason behind creating a boutique that feels warm, collected and meaningful. From the beginning, the goal has been to offer a thoughtfully curated shopping experience. Mustard Seed Market brings together a mix of vintage finds and new goods, creating a space that feels both elevated and inviting. Customers will find home decor, lifestyle goods, seasonal pieces, and unique items sourced from both small makers and well-loved brands.

Before opening the shop I spent over a decade in direct sales, helping scale purpose-driven brands while working alongside other women in leadership and business–this incredible experience working in collaboration with other women is something that continues to shape the community and collective feel of Mustard Seed Market today. What started as a small boutique in just 360 sq ft has quickly grown in to something bigger than I ever imagined. The community has shown up in the best way, and it’s allowed me to expand into a second, larger space–bringing together other local, women-owned brands under one roof while still keeping the curated, boutique feel. Beginning in May 2026 customers will find a new space dedicated to new additions like our thoughtfully selected clothing collection, a full herbal apothecary, kids new and second-hand goodness and of course more vintage finds and home decor. An expansion felt like a natural next step–it’s an opportunity to create more space not just for products, but for people–something that feels even more rooted in community.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve been beyond blessed with the best, most loyal customers, an encouraging community, an amazing MSM team, support from friends and a family who has worked long hours alongside me–Mustard Seed Market is only possible because of these people and I’m so grateful.

It hasn’t always been easy…there’s been a lot of learning along the way, taking risks, and figuring things out as I go. But it’s also been one of the most rewarding things in my life, being able to build something that is quickly becoming a gathering place for others, a place for connection, and a place to feel inspired.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At its core, Mustard Seed Market is about more than retail. It’s about creating a space where people feel inspired, welcomed, and connected—to their homes, to meaningful pieces and to the local community. I wanted to build a shop that wasn’t just about products, but about how those products make people feel in their homes and daily life.

A big part of what makes Mustard Seed Market special is its focus on supporting others. The shop regularly collaborates with local makers and small businesses, giving them a platform to share their work and talent within a retail space. This collaborative approach not only brings fresh, ever-changing products into the store, but also strengthens the sense of community that is at the heart of the business.

What sets Mustard Seed Market apart is the intentionality behind everything we do. From the way the shop is curated to the experience we create, every detail is thoughtfully chosen to feel warm, elevated and inspiring. Whether it’s hanging a prayer on our Community Prayer Wall, finding the perfect piece that makes their house feel more like a home, or picking out a new plant from our community propagation wall (coming in May 2026!) we want every person who walks through our doors to feel seen, inspired and right at home.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Downtown Lindstrom is a sweet town with many charming shops, local eateries, outdoor experiences and so much more. We’d love to have you visit Mustard Seed Market located in the same building as the famous Lindstrom Bakery. Spend a day exploring Lindstrom, “America’s Little Sweden”, and be sure to enjoy a donut or two at the Lindstrom Bakery while watching the steam billow out from the restored Coffee Pot Water Tower located right in the heart of town.
