Exploring Life & Business with Josh (CEO Josh) Hammonds of BSB records

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh (CEO Josh) Hammonds .

Hi Josh (CEO Josh), we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in the Bronx, NYC, 179 st Loring Place Burnside Ave and Washington Ave 165 st, where my grandma stayed. I got kicked out around age15 but fell in love with music (Hip Hop). I hung out with older guys in the streets, and transitioning into the music industry, they opened up a studio. I wrote raps that translated into making songs, and I landed my first record deal when Def Jam Records and Jaha Johnson signed me. He took me to Kevin Liles, VP of DEF jam records, and led me to get signed with top entertainment. It was the production label for Joe Budden at the time. The CEOs such as Webb, Nitty & Skane manage Fabolous and DJ clue the whole desert storm camp. That was like my introduction to the music industry through Web and Nitti during my rap career. I traveled to Miami and met a girl in Los Angeles who happened to be a multimillionaire at 21, so she and I got into a relationship. I moved to California at around 23 years old, which kicked off me mainly doing real estate. This was when the mortgage industry was booming, so that’s what she did she did mortgages. We had 1 million in the bank, and she would ask me like why do you want to be a rapper? When other executives were making way more money than rappers, and at that time that’s when I decided to start the label and my management group

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Everything you do this is going to be an ups and downs. There’s no success without obstacles; success without obstacles. We had super hiccups with you know everything when you are thinking you’re going to plan things when it comes to deals. I wasn’t able to release an album because, at the time, That’s when the whole label changed; that’s when LA Reid left Artista, that’s when Jay Z went over to DEF jam, so Kevin Liles left with Lyor Cohen to the warner music group. Hence, As a rapper, I got an advance but never got to drop an album due to the label Shift.
