Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Schuett.
Hi Julie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started loving the water after an injury in high school. In the water I found a quiet space that gave freedom incomparable to anything on land. I began working for the YMCA at several locations and really enjoyed working with adults that wanted to learn to swim. Helping others set goals and achieve them has been very rewarding. About 15 years ago I was asked to teach a friend’s child who was non-verbal and would run away and get into water. This challenge struck my curiosity and I began to learn all I could about people, especially children with a disability. I had been trained in adaptive swimming yet wanted more insight. I was fortunate to go to Metropolitan State’s Individualized Studies to custom create a degree in Drowning prevention with a Minor in Disability Studies. From here I’ve attended International and National drowning prevention conferences along with workshops hosted by professionals sharing the latest techniques in drowning prevention. I’ve traveled to Northern Ireland and collaborated with Swim Buddies , a school specializing in water safety. I loved everything they were doing and came home in 2019 wondering how to set up those conditions and methods . There is a growing population of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Land of 10,000 Lakes there is a large need for water safety appropriate for their sensory needs. I hope to help one lesson at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The struggle to find a quiet space for one on one lessons that is affordable has been a bit of a challenge. I go to a few hotel pools that are a bit quieter on weekdays and private homes. Many families are juggling a lot that have a child with disabilities. I give one on one and family style lessons having the support team in the water with me. This gives the child along with the other children in the family time to be together learning water safety and bonding time as well.
As you know, we’re big fans of Swim Ability LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Swim Ability LLC is a new name to a business that was operated as Swim 4 Life, MN. for many years. I chose to simplify the name in 2025. I teach lessons using an iPad with a water proof case displaying the swim jobs we are focusing on. I use icons the individual finds joy in and have the ability to share the lesson plan so they can practice breath work and other skills at home in a tub. I focus on the main factors that get an individual into trouble in the water. This gentle approach provides calm, safe enjoyable lessons. Each lesson uses methods in current swimming techniques including water play therapy and song. I look to get to know the whole child and their support team. I’m honored to be entrusted with teaching A-typical beings how to be safe and find a place to play with others on a more level playing field. The lessons are 30 minutes long and are the same day and time each week. I take checks, Venmo, Zelle and waivers for payment.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I find that preparation and showing up for each person brings good fortune. Like in life some moments are more challenging than others. At the end of the day I look to say I did the best for that day and situation as I could. Some days are harder than others yet I know I can do hard. I’ve been hugged, patted, hit, scratched and bit. I know that all are not in malice and look to support the individual where they can grow from. I’m proactive in wearing a rash guard to protect my skin. I’m also trained in Watsu a water therapy that has taught holds and manners to make the individual feel safe.
