Exploring Life & Business with Katerina Anderson of Black Onyx Dog Training

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katerina Anderson

Hi Katerina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I spent several years in a corporate job before realizing I was ready for a change. My dog, Rexha, sparked my passion for training and I began following trainers on social media whose methods resonated with me. In the fall of 2022, I had the opportunity to shadow Kait from Kane9 Dog Training, which solidified my desire to pursue a career in dog training.

Determined to deepen my knowledge, I applied to Starmark Academy in Texas and attended in January 2023. After completing the program, I participated in a six-week internship and then worked as a trainer at a facility for a year. In March 2024, I took the leap and founded Black Onyx Dog Training. Since discovering my passion for this field, I have continued to expand my expertise through various continuing education programs and shadowing opportunities.

I work full-time from home now, which creates an ideal training environment for the dogs in my program. They get to practice real-life scenarios in a home setting, making the experience feel familiar and eases their transitions. Families also get coached and taught what their dog has learned upon go home so they can feel comfortable and confident!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting my own business has come with its challenges, but I’m incredibly grateful for the support from this community! I was nervous in the beginning, but each day reaffirms how much my services are needed. Every challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow!

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Black Onyx Dog Training specializes in Stay & Train programs, where your dog stays in my home for 2-4 weeks while receiving personalized training. Beyond obedience, I focus on mindset, ensuring a well-rounded dog with a strong foundation. In addition to Stay & Train programs, I offer private lessons and various group classes! I believe all dogs—not just the “naughty” ones—benefit from training.

I also collaborate with PJ’s Rescue, working with dogs who need extra support before finding their forever homes.

A unique touch to my brand is that my dog, Rexha, is featured in my logo!

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
There is always more to learn! Keeping an open mind to different techniques for achieving the same or better result is essential. I’ve been so grateful for the acceptance and support from our local dog training community—everyone brings something unique and valuable to the table. And let’s be honest, there are plenty of dogs to go around!
