Hi Kelly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’m Kelly Zugay — a Minnesota-based small business owner, podcast host, and content creator. In college, I decided to study business, because I loved how creative entrepreneurship could be. By starting a business you can choose what to prioritize — unique branding, creativity, a personal client experience, content creation, etc. Uncertain of where I hoped my business degree would lead, I then chose to pursue a Masters in Teaching — which equipped me to think through processes and procedures from beginning to end and explain content to people in a user-friendly way. My first creative pursuit was my lifestyle blog, KellyZugay.com, which has served readers since 2013. Then, my background in business and education served as a beautiful foundation when I co-founded With Grace and Gold in 2014, because I was able to think both creatively and strategically — to develop a creative service-based business, presented to our clients in a user-friendly way. Since 2020, I have also hosted With Grace and Gold’s podcast — The Brand It, Build It Podcast — strengthened by my educational background and passion for sharing information in an easy-to-absorb way. Through small, actionable pieces of business education, our podcast equips small business owners of all kinds for growth and success.
Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In our first years of business, we struggled to find ourselves. Though we served fellow businesses through brand design and web design, in our early years, we struggled to feel consistently confident in how our business was being presented and the services we chose to offer. Since then, I’ve found there is no substitute for time — for gaining years of experience as a small business owner and discovering your business’s strengths and weaknesses. Now, we have confidence in our business, brand, and voice — and in the business-changing results we have created for our clients. Time has been tremendously helpful in our journey as small business owners — because we have had an opportunity to experience the highs and lows of entrepreneurship and then learn and grow.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
There is so much I love about Minneapolis! It has big-city amenities but a small-town feel. People are so friendly and welcoming, there is a strong sense of community, and there is great pride in all our city has to offer — beautiful lakes, parks, communities, festivals, and cultural experiences. I also love the fantastic restaurants and the many different cuisines that are represented. What I like least about our city is our cold and dreary winter weather, which seems to last for months and months! If Minneapolis could be in a warmer climate, that’d be amazing! The lakes, parks, and scenery are so beautiful here; it would be wonderful to enjoy it year-round.
