Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Josephson.
Hi Kevin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My desire to own and run a business started at a young age. My grandpa started Ace Solid Waste, and seeing what he built always inspired me. I admired the hard work, responsibility, and pride that went into creating something of your own, and I knew I wanted to do something similar one day.
I started my career in the RV industry working as a technician at an RV dealership. Over time, I moved into a service advisor role, which gave me the opportunity to see both the technical side of repairs and the customer service side of the business. While I enjoyed the work, I became frustrated with the level of service we were often able to provide. Customers were sometimes left feeling like they were just another number, and I knew there had to be a better way.
That became the motivation behind starting Happy Camper Mobile RV Service. I wanted to create a company where customers could receive knowledgeable, reliable RV service with a more personal, one-on-one experience. Being mobile allows us to meet customers where they are, communicate directly, and provide a level of care and accountability that I felt was missing in the industry.
Since starting Happy Camper, we have continued to grow by focusing on professionalism, communication, and quality workmanship. What began as an idea to improve the customer experience has grown into a business built around helping RV owners feel confident, informed, and taken care of.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, it has been a great experience, and we have been very fortunate to grow steadily over the past five years. That being said, like any business, it has not come without challenges.
One of the biggest learning curves has been going from being a technician and service advisor to learning how to run and manage a business efficiently. There is a lot that happens behind the scenes, including scheduling, customer communication, parts, billing, hiring, training, and making sure the business is operating in a way that supports both our customers and our team.
Another challenge, especially being in Minnesota, is the winter season. There are not as many campers being used during the colder months, so demand naturally slows down. We have worked through that by scheduling larger projects during the winter, such as water damage repairs, roof replacements, and other jobs that are difficult to perform onsite during the busy season.
As we have grown, another focus has been building and training the right team. RVs have a wide variety of systems, including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, LP, appliances, roofs, slide-outs, leveling systems, solar, and more. Training employees to be confident and knowledgeable across those different systems takes time, patience, and continued education. We want to expand, but it is important to us that we maintain the same level of quality, communication, and care that Happy Camper was built on.
I also have to give a lot of credit to my wife. Without the help and support of my loving wife, none of this would have been possible. Building a business takes a lot of time, energy, and sacrifice, and having her support has made a huge difference.
Even with the challenges, I am very grateful for the road we have been on. Every struggle has taught us something and helped shape Happy Camper into the company it is today.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Happy Camper Mobile RV Service is a mobile RV repair company. We work on campers, fifth wheels, motorhomes, ice houses, and trailers, and we handle a little bit of everything — diagnostics, repairs, maintenance, inspections, installations, and upgrades.
One thing about RVs is that there are a lot of different systems packed into one unit. We work on electrical, plumbing, HVAC, LP gas, appliances, roofs, awnings, slideouts, batteries, solar, and more. Every camper is a little different, so there is always something new to learn or figure out.
What we really try to be known for is good communication and honest service. A lot of people have had frustrating experiences getting their RV worked on, whether that is long wait times, poor communication, or not really understanding what is going on with their unit. We wanted Happy Camper to feel different than that.
Being mobile is a big part of what we do. When possible, we come directly to the customer instead of having them tow their camper somewhere. We also try to explain things clearly, give realistic expectations, and help customers understand their options.
I think what I am most proud of is the reputation we are building. We started Happy Camper because we felt customers deserved a better service experience, and that is still what we are working toward every day. We are not just trying to fix campers — we are trying to take care of people and help them enjoy their RVs with less stress.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
We started this business with practically nothing and worked hard to build it into what it is today. I would not say luck is what got us here, but I do consider myself very lucky to be where we are today.
There have been a lot of long days, learning curves, and challenges along the way, but we have also been fortunate to have great customers, support from the people around us, and opportunities to keep growing.
At the end of the day, I think hard work has played the biggest role, but I am very grateful for where we are and for the people who have helped us along the way.
