Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristina Thissen
Hi Kristina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my Physician Assistant career in Family Practice and Urgent Care. After I spent about 9 months in the clinic setting, I knew it wasn’t the right fit for me. During my PA school training, I loved my plastic surgery rotation and knew I wanted to find a job in that field. I ended up landing an amazing job in a private plastic surgery practice, where I was the PA for 3 female surgeons for 8 years. We specialized in breast surgery such as breast reconstruction after mastectomies, abdominoplasties, breast reductions and breast augmentations. I also managed the medical aesthetics clinic for the practice as well. I performed laser procedures, injectable services such as dermal fillers, Botox, Dysport and PRP. During my 8 years working alongside 3 plastic surgeons, I gained immense knowledge of the industry and had irreplaceable experience of the aesthetic field of medicine. However, when I was pregnant with my 4th child, I knew I couldn’t continue working the long hours I did in surgery and in clinic. So, I pivoted. I always had a passion for entrepreneurship considering I received a Business Management Degree alongside my medical degree. In 2021, at the heels of COVID, I opened Remedy Medical Aesthetics and Wellness with 2 business partners. We started in a one room suite and would rotate seeing patients based on room availability. As the business grew, life happened and two of my business partners moved on. In 2022, I became the sole owner of the company and relocated to Maple Grove where my 1800sq ft clinic is today. I have grown my practice into a multi 7 figure business, hired 3 providers (RN and 2 Nurse Practitioners), an office manager, a patient care coordinator and a marketing professional. Remedy continues to grow and thrive and we will soon be moving into a new 4200sq ft location to expand our services and hire more staff.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. I feel like anytime you find yourself in business ownership, there will always be hurdles. You will constantly need to pivot. It was a challenging time as I became the sole owner of Remedy. There is always a lot of stress when business acquisitions occur, but in the end everything happens for a reason. I most recently struggled with finding a new location for Remedy. I was looking for the perfect building and each time I thought I “found it” something would happen and it wouldn’t work out. I had to persevere and be patient. I think that is one of the hardest parts of owning a business- you have to constantly trust the process.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I opened my business at the tail end of Covid (2021). It was a busy time for aesthetics, actually. This was the time period when people were working from home and were constantly on zoom. They started to notice fine lines, they were bothered by sagging skin or uneven skin tone. Therefore, people looked to the aesthetic industry to address those concerns. We had constant shortages of supplies and goods which made our jobs very challenging, however, you have to learn to find solutions no matter what you are given.
