Today we’d like to introduce you to Leanne Kruse.
Hi Leanne, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Australia, where being outside was just part of daily life – camping trips, ocean swims, and endless time exploring. That love for nature never left me, and it shaped how I see the world – especially when it comes to caring for the environment.
When Mark and I moved to Minnesota, we both had this shared dream of owning a small business someday – something that gave back, built community, and felt true to who we are. When we came across Janky Gear, it felt like the stars aligned. We didn’t start the store, but we instantly connected with its mission: keeping quality outdoor gear out of landfills and in circulation, making adventure more accessible to everyone.
Taking over was definitely a leap of faith. We jumped in headfirst – learning retail systems, community outreach, marketing, and about a hundred other things on the fly (all while having two young kids). There were plenty of moments where we had no idea what we were doing, but we kept showing up, figuring it out piece by piece. Janky Gear continues to grow into something we’re really proud of – a space where sustainability, creativity, and connection all overlap and we can’t wait to see where it goes!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been more of an ebb and flow. Some weeks everything clicks, and other times it feels like we’re making things up as we go. There have been plenty of challenges – balancing inventory, navigating slower seasons, learning social media and just managing the unpredictability that comes with running a small business all while staying present to our family life. But every time something unexpected comes up, we learn a little more and get a little stronger.
What’s made it all worthwhile are the people. Our consignors, customers, and staff have been incredible. The community around Janky Gear has kept us inspired and reminded us why we do this. We’ve met so many generous, creative, and kind people who genuinely care about sustainability and supporting small businesses!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Janky Gear is a small consignment shop in Rochester, Minnesota, dedicated to giving outdoor gear and clothing a second life. We specialize in quality used gear for hiking, camping, skiing, and all kinds of outdoor adventure, as well as repairs and sustainable upcycling. Our goal is simple: help people get outside, reduce waste, and make adventure more accessible.
What sets us apart is our focus on community and sustainability. We don’t just sell gear – we connect people. Our consignors are part of the story, passing along items they love so someone else can create new memories with them. We offer gear repair services to extend the life of equipment, and we partner with local makers and organizations to keep our business deeply connected to the community.
Brand-wise, what we’re most proud of is that Janky Gear celebrates the “perfectly imperfect.” Our name is a nod to the idea that things don’t have to be perfect to be valuable or useful – just like people and experiences. Everything we do, from our product selection to our workshops and events, reflects that philosophy. We hope everyone who walks through our doors feels inspired to explore, reuse, and enjoy the outdoors responsibly.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love the spirit and creativity of the people here. Rochester has so many kind, passionate individuals who care about sustainability, local business, and connection. At the same time, the city is always changing — with medical tourism bringing new faces and seasonal fluctuations shifting the rhythm of daily life. That can make it challenging to build lasting relationships and a sense of community as an individual.
