Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Lind.
Hi Marcus, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started my career in broadcasting in high school, at KNEB radio in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. From there, I studied broadcast production at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and was a student worker for HuskerVision. After college, I moved back to Scottsbluff and obtained a position as News Director for Armada Media. Over the next few years I was promoted to Production Manager, Sports Director, Program Director, and Operations Manager. After success in those positions along with gaining experience in engineering and sales, Flood Communications hired me as Operations Manager for their Nebraska City market. As I continued to grow, an opportunity arose in Grand Rapids, Minnesota for a General Manager role at Rapids Radio. I was fortunate to be hired for the opening and have now led this market for 3 years.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Success only comes from the struggle. Through my journey in the broadcasting industry I have been through several buyouts and management changes. Position changes, and pay cuts. Personally, I have gone through addiction and come out on the other side, currently 11 years sober. Leaving family and friends behind to further my career has also been very challenging. However, it has all helped me grow and fuels me to continue the process.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Our business specializes in community connections, which not only entertains and informs, but helps drive the local economy. What sets us apart is our commitment to the communities we serve, we put a direct emphasis on doing business in all facets, as locally as possible.
Our brand stretches across Northern Minnesota, known as the Northlands Sports Leader. We cover a variety and teams and sports, all year long.
We offer Radio, TV, Digital, and complete consultation on business marketing.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Risks taking is part of growth. In order to succeed one must take risks and become uncomfortable.
A risk our business took recently was getting into event production. We took a very large financial risk to bring a music festival to our listening area. It was a massive undertaking for a very small staff of people.
Even though the risk from both a community engagement, and monetary stand point was extensive, we felt if we could pull it off, the impact would project our business forward. It did just that.
