Exploring Life & Business with Mary Deelsnyder of Printerette Press

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Deelsnyder.

Mary Deelsnyder

Hi Mary, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been working in the design industry for over 20 years. For most of my career, I owned a brand consultancy, where I directed creatives for some of the world’s most beloved brands. Through that work, I won design awards and had much success as a solopreneur. In 2015, an opportunity to build an experience design capability at Target was presented to me, and I couldn’t pass it up. So, I had a corporate adventure as a digital experience designer, design manager, and global design manager. I was always interested in greeting cards and stationery products. Some of my designs were even picked up by Target when I was working solo. In 2020, the opportunity to purchase Printerette Press was presented to me, and I jumped at the chance. Printerette had a great brand, and I loved the work done by the founder. I took it over because I saw an opportunity to do product design again, only on a larger scale this time.

Please talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned. Looking back, has it been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been challenging, but I don’t expect it to be smooth. Owning a small business is complex, and it feels like the volatility in the world adds another layer that we haven’t seen before. As a creative person, I want to make things for people. Playing a part in someone’s life by designing vehicles for connection is the best feeling ever. There are good days and bad days, but the good usually outweighs the bad, so that is why I keep creating.

As you know, we’re big fans of Printerette Press. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with the brand?
At Printerette Press, we believe in the personal touch. Every letter you send is more than words on paper; it’s an extension of you. Each sealed envelope is an invitation to experience life up close and personal. However, stationery that carries the weight of your emotions requires an individual designer who sees you and listens to your story, and transforms it into a design that is unmistakably you. We take that creative challenge personally. As a creative design studio specializing in wedding invitations and greeting cards, we help couples express their unique personalities and set the perfect tone for their special day. Our services go beyond the ordinary, ensuring that wedding invitations are not just pieces of paper but expressions of the couple’s individuality. What sets us apart is our dedication to crafting personalized and visually distinctive wedding invitations that transcend the limitations of traditional templates. We understand that your love story is one-of-a-kind, and your invitations should be too. We pride ourselves on being more than just designers – we are storytellers who bring your narrative to life through artful and original creations.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
In creative business ownership, the most significant lesson is to stay true to your design aesthetic. Challenges and trends will sway the industry, so staying committed to your unique artistic vision and style is essential. This lesson underscores the importance of authenticity and individuality in standing out among competitors. Staying true to your design aesthetic involves deeply understanding your creative identity, the values you wish to convey, and the distinctive elements that set your work apart. It requires resilience against external pressures to conform to fleeting trends. Instead, it champions the idea that your authentic voice and artistic expression have enduring value. By remaining dedicated to your design aesthetic, you establish a recognizable brand and foster a genuine connection with your audience. Clients and customers are drawn to authenticity; consistent design language builds trust and loyalty over time. This lesson emphasizes the long-term benefits of cultivating a distinct and unwavering design identity in the ever-evolving landscape of creative business ownership.
