Exploring Life & Business with Matthew Tramm of Tramm Law Firm, PLLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Tramm.

Hi Matthew, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey into estate planning has been shaped by both personal and professional experiences. Early in my career, I made over 400 court appearances in Ramsey County District Court handling child protection cases. Day after day, I watched families torn apart in moments of crisis, often without the planning or support that could have made those transitions more manageable. Those experiences showed me just how fragile family stability can be when the unexpected happens.

On a personal level, my wife and I went through the heartbreak of losing a stillborn son after years of struggling to start our family. Until then, I thought of myself as invincible. That moment shattered that illusion and impressed on me how uncertain life truly is. It was then that I realized how important it was for me to have a plan in place just as much as my clients did. Today, as the father of two children, that lesson feels even more real. I know firsthand the sense of peace that comes with knowing I have protected my own family through careful planning.

Professionally, I also spent time working as a trust officer for a major financial institution. In that role, I saw the tremendous value of good estate planning and, at the same time, the devastation that comes from overlooking critical details. It reinforced that estate planning is about more than just producing documents. It is about ensuring families are truly protected when it matters most.

In 2018, I launched Tramm Law Firm with the goal of reimagining estate planning in the Twin Cities. My vision was to create a service where the outcome of the plan was prioritized above the paperwork itself. Since then, I have guided hundreds of Minnesota families through the estate planning process, combining the lessons of my personal story with the expertise I gained in the courtroom, the financial sector, and private practice.

At its core, my work is about helping families avoid the pain and uncertainty I have both witnessed and lived through, and ensuring that they have the clarity and peace of mind that comes from knowing their loved ones are protected.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running your own law firm is never a smooth road. From the beginning, I have had to balance the competing demands of client service and business management. One day I might be working closely with a family to design their estate plan, and the next I am focused on marketing or operations. It can be exhausting to wear so many hats at once, and there were times when I felt stretched too thin.

Along the way, I made a conscious choice to focus my resources on achieving the right results for my clients rather than on the frills that some law firms emphasize at the expense of true client service. That approach has shaped how the firm operates and the trust we build with families.

Over time, I realized that the key was building a strong team around me. By surrounding myself with capable people, I have been able to delegate more and concentrate on the areas where I am most talented and best suited. That shift has not only eased my burden but also elevated the quality of service we provide to clients.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tramm Law Firm, PLLC?
Tramm Law Firm is a Minnesota-based estate planning practice dedicated to helping families protect what matters most. We focus on creating comprehensive will- and trust-based plans designed to avoid probate, reduce taxes, and provide clarity for families during life’s most difficult moments. Over the years, we have become especially well known for helping families with unique needs such as protecting cabins, navigating Minnesota’s estate tax, planning for long-term care, and setting up structures for children and grandchildren.

What sets us apart is our commitment to outcomes. Many firms focus on producing stacks of legal documents, but we prioritize making sure the plan actually works in practice. That means guiding families not only through the design of their estate plan but also through the critical follow-up steps to ensure it is properly implemented and funded. We view our role as partners in the process, not just providers of paperwork.

Brand-wise, I am most proud that Tramm Law Firm has earned a reputation for combining technical expertise with a human touch. Clients know they will be treated with respect, listened to carefully, and guided with compassion. We have built a practice that is approachable, educational, and deeply invested in the success of the families we serve.

For your readers, I want them to know that estate planning is not just for the wealthy or the elderly. It is for every family that wants peace of mind and the confidence of knowing their loved ones are protected. Whether it is a simple will or a complex trust-based plan, we are here to make the process clear, effective, and tailored to each family’s unique goals.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about the Twin Cities is the sense of community. People here care deeply about their families, their neighborhoods, and their shared future. There is also a balance of culture and nature that I really appreciate. We have world-class arts and restaurants alongside lakes, trails, and outdoor spaces that make family life here so rich. On top of that, there has never been a shortage of wonderful clients for meaningful estate planning. When I first started, I did not realize how large the market would be for an estate planner who focused on probing deeper and developing plans that truly protect family members rather than just running through the motions. I have never been more pleased at how many people in the Twin Cities share this mindset. Once I made it clear that we would not try to be the cheapest option, but instead would be the firm committed to creating the most impactful, protective, and meaningful estate plans, the clients followed.

What I like least is that, like many Minnesotans, I too can be ground down by the months of gray and sub-zero temperatures. At the same time, I believe it builds a certain strength, and by the time July and August roll around, I find myself looking forward to the cold just like most Minnesotans do.
