Exploring Life & Business with Meeg-wun DesJarlait of Skin Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meeg-wun DesJarlait.

Hi Meeg-wun, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My love for skin and beauty began as a young girl but it wasn’t until 2019 that I followed that passion. Before starting my esthetician journey, I originally planned to kickstart my career as a lash extension technician. I just knew I wanted to inspire and change lives in some way. It wasn’t until further research that I discovered esthiology. Which is the practice of skincare and related skin beautification including hair removal, makeup artistry and eyelash extensions. What intrigued me the most about esthetics is the focus of skincare health.

Growing up, and I’m sure I speak for many when I say this, is skincare education wasn’t a thing. In my family, we used what we had access to like our local Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, etc. with no knowledge if these products were right or even how to properly use them. Guessing and going through trial and error with products and at home treatments can, in most cases, damage our skin’s health. Not only does using the right products matter but keeping our gut healthy plays a big part that I think a lot of us tend to forget. Learning about skincare health has opened my own eyes to my overall health and I hope to inspire others. Considering the integumentary system is the largest organ I believe it’s important that we know how to properly care and nurture it to keep it healthy. This is why I aim to bring skin health education + indulging in self-care to my communities.

Upon graduating, I received my Advanced Practice Esthetician and Salon Manager’s License. During my time at school to even now I love continuing my education with variety of extra trainings and certifications as I want to provide the best to all of clients, always. Graduating with my Salon Manager’s License was a goal of mine as I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted or expected after school, but I knew I wanted to open a skin studio focusing on skin health + education.

My background allows me to run my very own skin studio while providing advanced skin facials and treatments. I registered Skin Therapy while I was in school, again not knowing exactly what I was doing, but didn’t open a physical location until December 2020 in Brooklyn Center. A year after opening in the midst of a pandemic I relocated to Golden Valley where I’m able to offer an even more exclusive experience for my clients.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
In life, things do not come easy but it’s the obstacles and lessons that nourishes us. When I opened Skin Therapy in December, I really didn’t know what to expect especially in the midst of a pandemic. With opening, I also took on a business venture that didn’t play out as visioned but sometimes you have to take a loss and learn how to grow from it. Not only did I experience a loss, but I was also hit with severe sciatica pain that would ricochet from my back down to my toes. This made building clientele and attending to my business very y hard. I had to limit my schedule as well as services offered. Later finding out I had a herniated disk in my lower back. With continuing with chiropractor visits I was able to alleviate my sciatica pain, still struggles with back cramps every now and then but with better health, I’m able to treat and give my clients a rewarding experience.

Through it all, I was able to overcome and learn different ways how to be a better business owner.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My name is Meeg-wun (Meme) DesJarlait, Multi-Cultural Advanced Practice Esthetician and Salon Manager. Skin Therapy is an Indigenous Woman owned skin studio specializing in ethical + result driven corrective skincare treatments. Services include facials, advanced treatments like dermaplaning and microneedling, body treatments, body waxing and beauty enhancement services like brow tints and eyelash extensions. As skin is individual the best way to approach it is just that, individually. Our services are always focused and customized to our client’s needs and concerns while using professional grade quality products. Upon opening my number one goal was to bring skin health to my communities, I take pride in being a multi-cultural skin therapist.

Our most popular services include: our Signature Facial, dermaplaning and chemical peels.

I’m dedicated in providing the best skincare education and assisting individuals on their healthy skincare journey. I always provide an in-depth skin analysis to all new clients; A skin consultation is a service I always recommend for new clients as it helps determine your skin type and health in return helps with a treatment plan and product recommendations. My approach with any service is gentle and I will never recommend or continue a service if it’s not best for my client.

My goal is to inspire individuals from all walks of life the importance of skin, health, and wellness. While providing a rejuvenating, safe and professional environment for those on their journey to healthy skin.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’ve always believed that everything happens for a reason. Despite the situation, there’s a lesson behind everything and with lessons come growth. I’ve always had a connection when it comes to butterflies. From my early days dancing at pow-wows in my fancy shawl regalia (a dance that represents butterflies) to today, you’ll probably never see me without one of many butterfly necklaces. I believe we go through many spiritual awakenings as healing and growing is a lifelong journey. Through those journeys, we consistently flourish.
