Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started in construction when I was 36 years old. I answered an ad for an appointment setter at a local home improvement company, only to find out it was a part-time telemarketing role. Initially, it was quite frightening to call and talk to homeowners about their home improvement needs. However, as time went on, I really enjoyed engaging with customers about their projects and how we could assist them.
That company took me under their wing and taught me the ins and outs of construction by placing me in various roles, including call center manager, canvasser, and participant at home and garden shows. From there, I became an assistant at another construction company that focused on storm damage restoration. I eventually transitioned into a project manager role, overseeing storm renovation projects, and later moved into a marketing manager position, leading the marketing teams for lead generation.
I managed to do all of this while attending college for marketing. I took a brief hiatus from the construction industry but continued to work as a subcontractor for other construction companies starting in 2013. Through my experiences with various contractors, I noticed a constant focus on numbers—the revenue targets we needed to hit. While I understand the importance of generating revenue, I genuinely cared more about the customer’s journey and their overall experience, which has often been overlooked in many construction companies.
In 2019, we opened our doors as a general contractor, offering full-service solutions for both interior and exterior home renovation projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a business owner is never an easy journey. There are numerous challenges to construction including economic fluctuations, technological changes, price hikes, and labor costs. Managing all these aspects requires constant attention.
In the construction industry, business owners must focus on building a strong team, cultivating a positive company culture, and developing effective processes and procedures. Additionally, it’s crucial to offer the best solutions and stay updated on industry trends.
Above all, prioritizing the customer experience is essential. Clear communication with our clients is a key focus for me. We strive to maintain transparency, ensuring that our clients have a solid understanding of their projects and the expectations we set.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I believe in the saying, “You are who you surround yourself with,” and this principle is very important to me. I always seek to be around people who inspire me and am selective about where I obtain my information. It’s essential to find individuals who are doing things right, as they can serve as role models for your own journey. By taking inspiration from them, you can develop your unique approach in your business.
I think everyone should have a mentor and be part of a community of like-minded individuals who share similar values and core principles. I’m involved in several networking and career development groups that focus on these important aspects. For anyone starting out as a new business owner or entrepreneur, one of the first steps should be to connect with good people who can serve as resources to help you grow as an individual.
