Exploring Life & Business with Sean Glessing of Sean’s Cabinetry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Glessing.

Hi Sean, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My father was a carpenter and as a child, he would bring me along to job sites and I would help out in any way that I could. When I entered high school I took a woodshop class and fell in love with it. It didn’t take long and I knew that this was something I wanted to do as a career. I worked out a deal with my aunt and uncle in Hutchinson to have my shop in their 400 square foot garage. In the first year or so I built almost 100 fireplace mantles for a local fireplace dealer along with several other projects like a drift boat and a fly rod. Another big accomplishment was building and installing my first kitchen at the age of 16. They loved it and the business started to take off so I needed more space. This led to the move to Cokato which gave me 1200 sqft to make cabinetry. This additional space led to the hire of my 1st part-time employee who is still working on our team today. A couple of years later we expanded into a 4000 sqft space within the same building. A couple more expansions later and Sean’s Cabinetry now operates out of the same building with 10 employees and 8000 sqft and plans in the works for further expansion to keep up with growing demand.

It’s been an exciting journey and I can’t wait to see how far we can take it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m very optimistic and I believe that hard work and staying power are the things that will get you through. In the early days of figuring out how to manufacture I would work all day, and then all night, and maybe sleep on the shop floor for a couple of hours putting in 100+ hours per week. We had lots of orders and we were still figuring out how to handle it so it was really tough. Learning how to manage a growing team was another great challenge. There was also far more to learning the ins and outs of good finance than I would have ever imagined. I started reading business books and attending conferences to learn more so I could better myself and improve. Lastly, learning to develop effective communication systems throughout the team is an ongoing challenge we continually strive to improve upon. I’ve been fortunate to have a strong support system with my wife Shelby being the biggest supporter of my vision and dreams which has helped a lot.
