Exploring Life & Business with Taylor Nelsen of Foundry House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Nelsen.

Hi Taylor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m one part of Foundry House, an interior design firm I co-founded with my business partner, Molly Schugel, nearly two years ago! Starting Foundry House has hands down been the best risk I’ve ever taken. There’s something incredibly rewarding about building a business from the ground up and being able to take real pride in what you’ve created.

I’ve always had a deep love for interior design. Growing up with a dad in construction, I was constantly exposed to the process of building and transforming spaces—it sparked something in me early on. I went on to earn my degree in interior design and spent time working at two design firms after college, which gave me a strong foundation. But eventually, I felt ready to take the leap and create something of my own. I feel really lucky to have landed in a career that I’m not only passionate about, but also excited to grow within every single day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think any business owner will tell you—it’s never a completely smooth road. That said, we feel incredibly fortunate to have had amazing connections and supportive clients who trusted us from the very beginning. This industry is all about relationships and consistently proving your value, and we’ve worked hard to do just that.

Having a steady stream of projects in our first two years has been a huge part of our success. Still, offering a luxury service in an uncertain market—and in a smaller town, no less—definitely comes with its challenges. The pool of clients who are both willing and able to invest in design services can be limited. That’s why we’ve been so intentional about building a strong aesthetic and reputation. We believe that’s what truly sets us apart in our area and continues to bring new clients through our doors.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Foundry House?
Foundry House is a full-service interior design firm, which means we handle everything from initial concept to final install. Our offerings include custom floor plans, exterior and interior design, material selections, ordering and facilitating materials, installation drawings, contractor communication, furnishings, and so much more. We’re here to take the guesswork out of the process and bring a cohesive vision to life.

What sets us apart is our ability to merge function with beauty—we’re known for creating spaces that feel curated, comfortable, and lived-in. Our clients often come to us for our attention to detail and the way we truly listen to their needs.

One thing we’re really proud of is how we’ve refined the building and remodeling process. We’ve worked through the common pain points so our clients don’t have to. We’re with you every step of the way, offering not just design expertise, but peace of mind. Our goal is always to create a beautiful space while making the experience as enjoyable and exciting as it should be.

At the heart of it, Foundry House is about creating intentional, lasting spaces—and making the process feel effortless for our clients.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t really believe in luck when it comes to business. Molly and I have worked incredibly hard for every single project and every bit of growth we’ve achieved. Where Foundry House is today is the result of consistent effort, determination, and a whole lot of passion.

That said, I do believe in what some people call the “burnt toast theory”—the idea that every yes, every no, every twist and turn leads you to exactly where you’re meant to be. I’ve made choices that have shaped my path, and while timing and opportunities matter, a thriving business doesn’t happen without putting in the work.

Loving what I do has been the biggest factor in getting to this point. That passion drives everything—from the long hours to the smallest design details—and I think that’s what truly makes the difference.
