Exploring Life & Business with Vuthy Devalla of A forgetful Baker

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vuthy Devalla.

Hi Vuthy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
To make the story short and sweet, I worked at a local bank for about 5yrs and was fired. It’s one of those blessings in disguise Type of moments. I then took a month off to figure out what I wanted to do and went to Le cordon Blu here in MN. I graduated in 2012 and worked at various bakeries to see what I would enjoy doing with my degree. I then had my daughter in 2014 and stayed home to care for her while working on custom cakes and treats out of my home. With Constant love and support from friends and family, the home business grew, and we opened A Forgetful Baker Store in 2019.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would say somewhat smooth with a few bumps in the roads. Our store build-out was behind by 3 months, resulting in A Forgetful Baker opening at the end of November, which is a slower season for us. Then, of course, 3 months later, we had covid quarantine in full effect. In my 1st year of business, we dealt with a pandemic, layoffs, and the store was temporarily closed. At the same time, We had to find creative ways to make some revenue.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about A forgetful Baker?
We’re a cake shop focused on custom orders, fruit cakes, and Asian-inspired dessert flavors. We’re known for our fruit cakes, light and not too sweet a treat. We’re a scratch bakery; mostly, everything is made from scratch in-house using recipes that the kitchen manager (Penny) and I have come up with. We’re a woman-owned and run Poc small business, especially as Khmer American. It means a lot to be out here and have a Khmer customer come in and be surprised to know the owner is Khmer. We’re a small business offering Asian inspires cake flavors in the southwest metro. We make cakes & cupcakes for all occasions, from weddings to birthday cakes and everything in between.
We also offer an on-site decorating class for kids and adults.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you, or support you?
Follow us on social media, stop for a treat (we usually have a case full of goodies), or order one of our cakes from our website aforgetfulbaker.com.
