Hidden Gems: Meet Andy Weld of Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andy Weld.

Andy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story begins as a drummer before a woodworker. I have played drums since a very young age and ultimately it was the gateway into a world of woodworking. As a kid I remember tinkering with my dad in the garage, taking apart old VCR players or stereos to look at what’s inside. Eventually, I did the same with drums – taking them apart, modifying, cutting, drilling, refinishing, etc. This lead to the first iteration of Rovan — Rovan Hand Crafted Drums.

I moved to Minneapolis in 2010 got a job restoring old furniture and ultimately that lead to the decision to go to school for fine woodworking out in Denver, CO and learn more about building furniture from scratch. After graduating that program and working in unheated woodshops in Boulder, I made the move back to Minneapolis to launch Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture in 2013. We’re so excited and honored to be nearing out 10th year in business building bespoke furniture for commercial and residential spaces.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a business always comes with both major challenges and even bigger celebrations. We’ve had a fair share of challenges in growth, managing several jobs at once, or taking on a build that feels out of our wheelhouse and needing to acquire certain skills on the fly to execute properly. Typically on the other side of those struggles are a high reward and that’s what makes it all worth it and drives us to get to the next step in business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture?
Our team at Rovan Hand Crafted Furniture builds high end custom made furniture. We specialize in outfitting bars and restaurants with tables, bar tops, specialty back bars and building residential furniture whether it be dining tables, coffee tables, or credenzas and sideboards. Since we are a fully customizable woodshop, we aren’t married to a specific style or aesthetic of furniture. We’re ultimately here to build exactly what our clients and designers are looking for. Our job is to bring that vision to life by using certain techniques, materials, and finishes to create a truly one off piece of furniture.

All the materials that we use are locally sourced from the midwest, aside from the occasional job that we’ll import some exotic slabs. We are actually currently working on a 60′ long bar top with some imported slabs from Central America. We’ll be excited to share that project with you when it’s all wrapped up.

We provide free estimate so please feel free to reach out!
