Today we’d like to introduce you to Char Reinhart-Kalk.
Hi Char, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a young girl, I have fond memories of watching This Old House on PBS with my dad. Together, we would learn the “tricks of the trade” and dream of restoring grand Victorian homes. Growing up in a house built in 1910, my dad was always working on a project or planning the next one. This is undoubtedly where my affinity for older homes, beautiful woodwork, and appreciation for true craftsmanship began.
My journey into real estate started in 1997 when I purchased my first long-term rental property. Over the years, I added several more to my portfolio, learning the ins and outs of property management along the way. I’ve done it all—from shingling, siding, and painting to clearing clogged drains and basic maintenance. Through these hands-on experiences, I learned exactly when to do the work myself and when to call in a professional. Best of all, I discovered my love for the “fun stuff”: demolition, design, and decorating.
In 2020, an opportunity arose to purchase a beautiful home in the heart of historic New Ulm. This particular house had already been lovingly restored. I just had to put my final touch to it. While my original plans were different, I decided to list it as a short-term rental to generate income. Because of the global pandemic, travelers were seeking the safety of private homes over hotels, and my calendar began to fill up quickly.
Just nine months later, another historic gem in the center of town became available. With interest rates at historic lows, I knew I had to seize the opportunity. I have put literal blood, sweat, and tears into these homes, and seeing guests enjoy these restored spaces makes every moment worth it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The charm of an older home is undeniable, but it certainly keeps me on my toes. There is always a new project on the horizon—whether it’s replacing furnace parts, fixing leaks, installing a new roof, or mending fences, I truly enjoy the constant process of preservation and repair.” Which all come at an expense. A water heater doesn’t go out at the most convenient time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I’ve always believed that the best way to share a place you love is to invite people to experience it for themselves. That belief is what led me to open two short-term rental homes in New Ulm, Minnesota—my hometown and a place I’m incredibly proud of.
I own two beautiful100-year-old plus homes located right in the heart of New Ulm, just a block off downtown dining, shops, museums and local gathering spots. Both are listed on VRBO and Airbnb, and each one reflects what I love most about this town: history, walkability, and a strong sense of community. These aren’t just places for guests to stay—they’re a way for people to feel what it’s like to truly be in New Ulm.
What I love most about hosting is bringing people to my hometown. Whether guests are here for a festival, a family event, or a quiet weekend away, I want them to experience the charm and character that make New Ulm special. The homes themselves are part of that story. Their age, craftsmanship, and location connect guests to the town’s past while placing them right in the middle of its present.
For me, short-term rentals are about more than providing a comfortable space. They’re about creating a welcoming experience and helping visitors discover the local businesses, restaurants, and traditions that make this community what it is. I want people to leave feeling like they’ve found a hidden gem—and maybe even planning their next visit before they go.
By caring for and sharing these historic homes, I feel like I’m doing my part to preserve New Ulm’s character while inviting others to enjoy it. It’s something I truly love doing, and it’s incredibly rewarding to watch guests arrive as visitors and leave with a real connection to this town.
