Hidden Gems: Meet Dennis Mwaura of DZ Lawn Care & Snow Removal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dennis Mwaura.

Hi Dennis, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Well I started DZ Lawn Care 4 to 5 years ago. At that time, I had been working full time at Catapillar and every year for July 4th we would have a week of unpaid vacation. During this time I was under the assumption that we were unable to file for unemployment. Which led me to start DZ Lawn Care so I could make money during these weeks off. It began with me purchasing a lawn mower from the auction and began mowing residential properties and I just kept the business going even after I had that week off. At the beginning I would work for 3-4 hours mowing lawns after my full time job and each year I became busier and busier, especially after I began doing snow removal.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a learning experience that’s for sure. My first hard challenge was when I was still working full-time at Caterpillar and a storage company had reached out for snow plowing 10 of their properties. This was 3 years after I had started DZ lawncare and snow removal. Of course we took on the contract and because I had been working for Caterpillar I was able to get 35% off of a skid steer to help with snow plowing the 10 properties. But the first snow storm was definitely a challenge for my partner, Zach, and I. I had to learn how to use a skid steer in the heavier storm and it took us a consecutive 40 hours to plow. At this point, I wanted to give up and thought it was way easier just not to run a business, but i’m glad I kept going. By the end of that season, I could knock it down to 10 hours to plow 10 locations for public storage. The worst part was I used all my vacation at work by April, so I could not take any time off for the rest of the year. This was when I decided I needed to quit working at Caterpillar the following year to keep on growing my business. During the same week that I hadput my 2 weeks in a position for R&D technician became available, which I had wanted for 6-7 years, but I had to make a choice whether to stay or to quit and run my business and I decided to quit in January of 2021.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What matters most to you? Why?
I am providing the same quality service or better year after year. Over the years, I’ve heard or seen many similar companies grow and forget about people who supported them from the beginning, which are residentials. When I get calls for qoutes I often here that A company is no longer doing residentials and they are in need of servie. I feel this is a promise I made myself that I will not do the same thing to my customers. I also value many traits, but communication is the biggest. It goes a long way and can do a service that much better. One of the best compliments I get is in snow removal. We will send notifications before storms to notify my customers about upcoming storms and a time frame of when services are to be completed. This has helped us to be transparent and always get a piece of mind from a customer that we will show up every time.
