Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg.
Hi Greg, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
We both grew up in Northern Minnesota, where spending time outdoors was just part of everyday life. Camping became something we really enjoyed together—first in a teardrop camper we built from scratch, and later in a camper van we converted ourselves. Over the years, we explored campgrounds all over the state and beyond, always finding new places to enjoy and new ideas to dream about.
For a long time, we’d talked about running a campground of our own. It started as casual conversation during road trips or around the campfire, but the idea stuck with us. When Greg decided he was ready for a career change, we started taking the dream more seriously. We spent months researching and visiting resorts and campgrounds across Minnesota, trying to find a place that felt right.
The seventh property we toured turned out to be it. It was in a familiar part of the state, not far from where we both grew up, and surrounded by great local attractions. As soon as we saw it, we both had the same feeling—this was the one.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Looking back on our first year, we feel incredibly grateful for how smoothly things went—especially as brand-new business owners. The support from our friends and family was more than we could have hoped for, and it played a big part in making the season a success. We had the chance to meet so many friendly campers from all over Minnesota, across the country, and even a few from around the world. There’s something special about the camping community—people show up with a positive, easy-going spirit that makes each day enjoyable. Of course, there were challenges too. The biggest one was simply not knowing what we didn’t know. But we learned a lot along the way and we’re already using those lessons to shape our plans for year two.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Knife Island Campground is a family- and pet-friendly spot just outside the scenic city of Duluth, Minnesota. Set in a wooded area along the St. Louis River, we offer a mix of camping options—from spacious RV sites and secluded tent spots to cozy, rustic cabins. A unique feature of our campground is the small island just off shore—a quiet little escape that’s great for fishing, hiking, or just enjoying a peaceful picnic. Whether you’re looking to unwind in the trees or explore everything the Duluth area has to offer, Knife Island makes a great basecamp.
What really sets us apart is the personal touch we bring to everything we do. We take pride in creating a welcoming, laid-back atmosphere where guests feel right at home. From the start, we’ve focused on friendly service, clean and well-kept facilities, and little conveniences that make a big difference—like delivering firewood right to your campsite. We want every guest to have a great experience, whether they’re here for a weekend getaway or an extended stay, and we do our best to make sure that happens.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
We really enjoy being in Esko—it’s a small town with a lot to offer, especially for people who love the outdoors. We’re just minutes from Jay Cooke State Park and several great hiking and biking trails, making it easy for guests to get outside and explore. We’re also close to Duluth, a fun and vibrant city known for its lakeside charm, local shops, and seasonal events that draw visitors year-round. And being right on the St. Louis River is something we truly value—there’s just something about being near the water that adds to the experience.
