Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Martinez.
Hi Ivan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started my journey when I was in graduate school and wanted to start a blog and start being consistent on Instagram. I was nervous at first with all the judgment that happens through the platform. One of my friends basically talked me into starting. I was consistent on the blog and on IG and began to work with brands and ever started a YT channel doing reviews. I was always into classic menswear (suits and ties) and a few years down the road my now wife and I were expecting. I wanted to get more income for the new member of the family so with the help of a friend I started working at a custom suit shop. I learned about measurements, the drape of a suit, different customizations and designs. To say the least I fell in love with the process and more with suiting. A year later we were laid off due to the pandemic and I still had a full time job working from home. Nevertheless, I wanted to take the skills I had and continue to work with clients but now with my own brand. I reached out to another agent that was also doing the same and learned a bit of how everything worked, I took the information and ran with it. I am now selling custom suits and leather jackets along with other menswear items. I am happy with where I am now and I continue to work towards improving my customer experience and bettering my brand.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road but hasn’t been a super rough one. One of the biggest struggles that I have is just finding time to do everything I have to do.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about By Mr. Martinez Custom Clothing?
I am a custom suit clothier. I had a wide array of fabrics, buttons, linings and design options for both suits and leather jackets. I am known for styling my suits more casual and laid back (suit with a tee is my vibe). I am a Mexican-American and a veteran and that really sets me apart from others, especially in a Latino market. I don’t have one specific thing I am proud of brand wise I believe that just by doing what I am doing now I’m proud. I am a person that is really in love with style and helping find their personal style, anyone can wear a suit but it’s how you wear it that makes a difference.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would say that you have to sacrifice some fun for what you want to achieve and even a little sleep. In order to achieve what you want, you have to do things that you are not doing now.
