Hidden Gems: Meet James (Jim) Gerholdt of The Remarkable Reptiles

Today we’d like to introduce you to James (Jim) Gerholdt.

Jim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have been interested in reptiles since I was young and have been learning about them ever since. I am now 78. I worked in zoos for over 26 years and have been doing educational programs since 1982. I have also worked closely with the MN DNR and maintain 3 of our 4 Threatened species of reptiles for use in my programs. I have been fortunate to have aided in field studies of our Threatened Timber Rattlesnake and have done survey work for our Endangered Blanchard’s Cricket Frog. I am a Founding (and now Lifetime member) of the Minnesota Herpetological Society. I use 10 live reptiles (2 turtles, 3 lizards, 5 snakes) in my standard program. and also offer a 16 cage display of live reptiles for less formal events. I have photographed many species of reptiles and amphibians and have quite a few published images.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Getting started in presenting educational programs is a slow process. Otherwise, things have gone smoothly.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I started The Remarkable Reptiles in the early 1980s. My goal was to educate people about these amazing critters and to bring them over from “the dark side”. I like to think that I have cracked some pretty hard nuts over the years. I also use humor in my presentations as this is a great way to keep the audience’s attention. This especially applies to the children. If anyone wants to overcome their fear of these critters, in particular snakes, my program is what you want. My photography has benefited from many field trips (herping) over the years. These trips have included MN, WI, CO. TX, AZ, NM, and CA. To me, these are vacations.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I take great pleasure in my educational efforts. To see the smile and wonder on a child’s face after petting their first snake is really rewarding. This also applies to their parents (big kids).
