Hi Jamie, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sweet Mana was originally founded in 2010 in Vail, Colorado. I was working full-time as a massage therapist/esthetician and my clients were always mentioning how dry their skin felt. The high altitude climate can be unforgiving to the skin with its lack of humidity, strong UV rays, cold winter temps, and excess wind. So I started playing around in my kitchen, making body butter and lotion candles to use in spa treatments. The feedback was encouraging, so I kept producing… and a side hustle was born.
I named the business Sweet Mana, for my love of all things Hawaii. Even though I was living in the mountains, I am truly a beach girl at heart. In the Polynesian language, mana represents the essence of the soul or magical energy in all living things. I channel this inspiration into my products, hoping to bring that aloha spirit and healing mana (energy) to my customers no matter where they live.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any adventure, there are always bumps along the way. I started with zero business background and no intention to start a business. From day one, I have been learning as I go and overcoming challenges in the general operations of a growing/scaling business.
Some of these include time management, surviving Covid, supply chain issues, keeping up with social media, offering too many products, packaging fails, lack of marketing, understanding SEO, hiring out, etc. The important thing is to continue to learn, evolve, fine-tune, and be proud of the journey thus far.
