Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Matson.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Jessica Matson. I have been a cosmetologist for 12 years. When I was a sophomore in high school, my sister, Jolene Timmers opened up Serenity Spa and Salon. I started working for her as a receptionist. I instantly fell in love with the beauty industry and decided I would go to cosmetology school as soon as I graduated. I did and started behind my chair right away as one of her employees. In 2018, I became an independent stylist and worked side by side with Raya, my now business partner. I have been friends with Raya since we were in pre-school. We went to school together all growing up and always remained close friends. In 2021, Raya and I purchased Serenity Spa and Salon featuring Posh Affair Boutique from Jolene. In 2023, we purchased the building where Serenity is located and opened M&H Superior properties with our husbands, Chase Matson and Dan Horst. We now are both still cosmetologists, owners of Serenity Salon and Posh Boutique, and owners of M&H Superior Properties. We currently have 12 employees employed through Serenity and have 6 independent contractors who rent from M&H Superior Properties who are a mix of cosmetologists, a medical aesthetician, and a massage therapist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Luckily, it has been a rather smooth road. Jolene helped us with the behind the scenes paperwork to make the purchases happen and I also took multiple business classes. Now, owning business’s with my best friend is a dream come true.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Serenity Salon and Posh Boutique?
Serenity Salon and Posh Boutique is a full service salon. Our services consist of manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, body waxing, coloring, cutting, hair extensions, lash extensions, and bridal services. We also have a boutique where we sell clothing, hair care products, and a variety of other fun findings! We have employees and also independent stylists right next door to us. Our building also has a medical aesthetician facility in it. We are a very open and welcoming salon! We love to participate in many community events. Some of these things are free father and daughter hair classes, we have an adopted park a couple blocks away from us that we attend to multiple times a year, we host a block party where any local vendors are welcome to attend free of charge, we also do yearly donations of products from our salon and boutique. Previous places we have donated to are harbor house, foster care system, nursing homes, and Superior Senior Highschool. We have also donated to multiple fundraisers and sponsor a local race car! We pride ourselves on our beautiful plants that we keep in our big front windows and having a relaxed environment!
What are your plans for the future?
Each year, we have made updates and changed our operations. We now have a well maintained business that we plan to keep thriving and educating ourselves in the newest trends!
