Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordyn Harman.
Hi Jordyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2019, I was in my first year of being a Nurse Practitioner. I lived in St. Peter, MN & was working full-time in family medicine in St. Peter. One of my friends I graduated with, & I were looking at continuing education to do & she said, hey, there’s this training in Iowa & it’s for Botox & filler but has CME, we decided it would be a fun way to get additional education while learning a new topic. From a young age, I’ve always been a “girly girl” so I’ve always been interested in skincare, make-up, etc. We both went to Des Moines to take the course, which was a bonus for me as I’m from IA so I got to stop & see my family too.
During the course the instructor said “You know, you have an eye for this stuff” & I was like I do? I just thought it was really fun. From that point on, I took 6 additional trainings & decided to open my business Med Spa Express, in my hometown of Pocahontas, IA. The name came from the possibility of being able to add “express care” with aesthetics. We loved St. Peter but knew it wasn’t our forever home & knew eventually we would like to be back closer to family, so this worked well as I could do it out of my mom’s salon on the weekends, & see family— it was a win-win.
Shortly after, I got a job offer back home & we relocated back to Pocahontas, IA where I am from. What started as a fun side gig to help pay off student loan debt, turned into a dream & soon a reality. In 2020, amongst the ups & downs of Covid, I also happened to be pregnant with our first child. I took some time away from the med spa due to restrictions, & safety for myself & unborn child due to so many unknowns. I had our son, Ridge in September of 2020 & was due to go back in December from maternity leave. I came back to my med spa in November to get my patients in, & in one month, I had 50 NEW patients.
It was at that point that I started dreaming about what this could be, & after talking to one of my dear friends who’s been in the industry far longer than I, she convinced me to go all in. I spoke with my husband & we decided this is it. We purchased a building, completely renovated it, and I went down to part-time in family medicine, then eventually in January of 2022, I went to my med spa full time. What started as just me; in my mom’s salon, had grown to 150 patients & I needed the help of my sister to be able to run this business.
We opened in the new building full time in Jan. 22, & by Jan. 23 we had grown to over 500 patients. Fast forward to July of 2023 & we now have nearly 750 patients & have grown our staff to a dream team total of 5 of us. We have also outgrown our newly renovated 1,500 sq ft space that has 4 treatment rooms & are in the process of purchasing a lot, to build a 4,200 sq ft 10 treatment room facility.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Never a smooth road. We’ve had our fair share of ups & downs, but giving up isn’t an option for me. Covid where I had to stop working completely, & then in turn it made my business blossom in hindsight. Growing pains of needing to add more staff, more rooms, more services & growing our client base at a rate much faster than we anticipated.
Trying to get staff trained & systems in place as I am due with our final baby in August 2023. As a small business owner, you have highs & lows; you have record-breaking months & then there are days when the phone doesn’t ring & you wonder if this is what you should be doing.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are an Aesthetics & Wellness practice known for giving patients a 5-star experience they cannot get anywhere else. We have patients who travel 2 -4 hours one way to see us. We specialize in creating natural results & helping patients look & feel their best from the inside out. We look at the whole picture of health from your lab work to your skin. We offer tox, filler, lasers, RF micro-needling, body contouring, Vaginal rejuvenation, facials, lashes, massages, brows, and consultations. Comprehensive lab reviews, thyroid & hormone optimization & more.
Our patients aren’t just a number to us, we love to build relationships with them; get to know who they are, their families, where they vacation, etc. I’m also really big on education, last year I was fortunate enough to be one of 50 people in the world to train at the Inner Circle in Switzerland with some of the top injectors in the world. Knowledge is power & I spend thousands of dollars every year learning the latest & greatest & researching the best services, techniques & technology to bring to Med Spa Express. I truly have poured my heart, soul, blood, sweat & tears into this business.
Any big plans?
New build in 2024, including a training area in our new facility. I currently train new injectors but plan on devoting more time to this. Unfortunately, it’s not super profitable to train, but it’s second nature to me & something I am passionate about. There is no regulatory body over med spas, which is concerning, I’ve had lots of conversations with the board of Nursing about that—So, if I can take my years & dollars’ worth of investing in my education & help get other injectors trained the right way, I think it’s part of my duty to do that. People don’t realize how dangerous these procedures can be in untrained or inexperienced hands. Our goal for 2023 is to get to 1000 patients by January & continue to grow intentionally & give patients a 5-star experience.
