Hidden Gems: Meet Karrie Cable Rodriguez of Equikare, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karrie Cable Rodriguez.

Hi Karrie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I often joke that this career shift is my midlife crisis. I spent over 30 years sitting at a desk and found myself burned out. Realizing that the barn was where I was happiest, I was driven to learn more. I went back to school and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Equine Science. Along the way, I earned certifications in equine massage and various modalities that complement it. After graduating with my BS, I wanted more, so I enrolled in a Master’s program to earn my MS in Equine Health and Behavior.

For the past 3.5 years, I have been the Director of Racehorse Reimagined, a racehorse aftercare program here in Minnesota. Through this work, I also led rehab work. And this is what led me to expand my equine bodywork business, offering rehab services for privately owned horses. I learned that there is no other facility in Minnesota that strictly operates as a rehab or transitional care facility.

The rehab side has only been open for a few months, and we already have 10 horses in our care! We can only go up from here.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, the road has not been smooth. My husband and I have been looking for our own farm and haven’t found the right one. I was fortunate that the Founder of This Old Horse/Racehorse Reimagined recognized the value of my crazy idea and offered me space in one of their barns.

As you know, we’re big fans of Equikare, LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
When I founded Equikare, my intent was to provide massage and bodywork to horses. I am heavily involved with the Minnesota racing community, having a horse that raced at Running Aces. I became the only provider licensed to work backside at both our Thoroughbred and harness tracks.

This led to the expansion of Equikare into providing rehab and medical care for privately owned horses.

I work with horses of all ages and abilities, but specialize in sport horses.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I have so many cheerleaders! Nancy Turner of This Old Horse has been instrumental in allowing me the opportunity to open the rehab side of Equikare in one of her barns. My clients, my family, the racing community, and my small team. I couldn’t do this work without any of them and their support.
