Hidden Gems: Meet Laura Bixler of Laura Jean Media Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Bixler.

Hi Laura, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
In 2015 I started taking pictures of products for a few different local businesses. I enjoyed it so much that I decided I should start taking more pictures of items/products. I also enjoyed real estate and worked part-time with a local realtor as her assistant. She encouraged me to explore real estate photography and connected me with a few other agents. Additionally, I was doing a few small family sessions and having fun with that as well. Ultimately, I wanted to focus on real estate and would continue to offer portrait and product sessions part-time. In September 2017, Laura jean Media Services was born – real estate, product, portrait, and headshots. Looking forward to and highly grateful to be celebrating 5 years.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s had its ups and downs for sure. Being in real estate – you have to expect a cyclical year where you’ll be crazy busy one week and completely quiet the next. It takes some getting used to and adjusting financially to be prepared.

As you know, we’re big fans of Laura Jean Media Services. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
I offer a range of photography needs, whether real estate, product, headshots, family, etc. My specialty would have to be real estate and interior design photography. In our small town, every photographer doing real estate has their own style, which makes us a little different. However, I love families and lifestyle headshot sessions.

Every year I offer summer and fall mini sessions coming up soon, and I’m very much looking forward to those! I will also be offering mini holiday sessions in November! Proud to be a loyal, trusting, and dedicated photographer who loves engaging with others.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
Facebook groups are always beneficial for learning about how to start a business. People advise on where to go, what to do, etc. I, fortunately, had a great mentor starting who guided me along the process along with a lot of Google searching. Feel free to contact others in the profession and ask for their input. You might make a good connection. I have a photographer friend in another state who wanted help getting their LLC set up – so we chatted online, and I walked her through the process.
