Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Ross
Mike, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My love and passion for photography started in 2008 when I started photographing my daughter around the neighborhood. Being that most of my friends and family where out of Minnesota, I would post photos I took of my daughter and quickly, they said that I could do it professionally. A couple years later, I booked my first client (family session) and I haven’t look back ever since!
Since then, I’ve been apart of a few feature films, shorts, commercials and worked at a tech consultancy for 14 years as their Multimedia Producer (video and photo). Nowadays, I’m an owner of Mike Ross Visuals, which specializes in headshot and corporate photography.
I’m very, very blessed and thankful to start my career in Minnesota and would do again, if I could. The people here are just wonderful to work and collab with and great clients through out the years.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say in my video/photo career at The Nerdery of 14 years, there were ups and down but to be honest, there was a great stretch of work being produced. Like any other company, change in leadership was difficult for creative reasons, but since I build the video practice, it wasn’t that bad.
Freelance wise, I was very ignorant business wise and made bad decisions, if I could go back with the knowledge I have now, I would possibly be doing some Netflix work or something like that hahaha
Also raising family while juggling work wasn’t smooth either! Thank goodness for the pandemic where I learned that family is first and how crucial work-home balance is (unless you’re at a startup I guess)
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mike Ross Visuals?
I started Mike Ross Visuals in 2008 and had it going til 2013, then at 2024, I opened up my business again after being laid off of 11 years.
Mike Ross Visuals does headshots and corporate photography for companies that are re-branding or want to bring the connection to their employees. Also, individual professionals who want to make an first impression to their network and potential employers.
What sets my business apart is the collaboration and the importance of connecting with my clients. Also, I take the technical part of my business very seriously and my clients have raved about it throughout the years.
I am very proud of the clients I’ve worked with and how they feel after getting their photos. My brand is minimalist, positive and exciting.
I offer headshot and corporate photography to start-ups, real estate, small and medium sized businesses. I also cover team bonding events as well. I work with a small team to get the best coverage that suits my clients brand and purpose.
How do you define success?
I define sucess as whatever you feel you’ve done to complete your purpose goals. If its making a profit, working with dream clients, the health of yourself or family, etc, I believe that defines success, its all what you think it is as an individual.
