Hidden Gems: Meet Moe Evans of Wae Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moe Evans.

Hi Moe, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
When you get launched into your career after cosmetology school, by law, you’re allowed to do it all. Nails, skin, perms, color, waxing, facials, haircuts, and more. The first salon I worked at was full service so we did indeed do it all. I would wax, give pedicures, wax men’s backs, color hair, cutting all sorts of styles and textures. I quickly learned nails and body waxing were not for me.

After 6 years I chose to step out and rent a chair at an awesome salon with 25 other stylists. There I could offer only the services I wanted which were all hair and some brow waxing. I also went to NYC for intensive beauty/fashion makeup training. I was doing mostly bridal makeup every weekend and a little editorial too. This is where I discovered how much of an impact eyebrows have. When it comes to expressing your emotions, your brows tell all! Appropriately groomed brows portray your beautiful personality from the inside out.

Enter Spring 2020. Need I say more? Salons were closed for 3 months which gave me a bounty of time for soul searching. I sat with my thoughts during this time and came back to work with a whole new perspective. From then out, I was only going to do the hair and brow services I enjoyed doing. I retired from wedding party makeup as I realized the events were too stressful and exhausting at this point in my life. I now had more time to be behind the salon chair! I was honing in on my hair specialties of blonde hair coloring but felt I didn’t have the appropriate setup to extend my eyebrow services nor the space to expand my extension clientele.

I loved all 8 years at this salon, but I recognized that I was aspiring to provide my guests with a different experience than what I could offer there. After searching for over a year I found a space that was about to become available where I could do just that. I now share a studio with a friend whom I bonded with at our previous salon and who shares the same values and passions. The studio is within an office complex where I can provide, a cozy, peaceful experience with a beautiful view from floor to ceiling windows. I’ve expanded my brow service menu and much more customized hair services.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I decided to go to Cosmetology school after High School graduation, I was immediately discouraged, being told I would never make any money doing that job. I did it anyway. I had a mattress on the floor of my brother’s apartment living room. I worked after school and on weekends. After graduating and getting my Cosmetology license, I quickly learned that hairstylists start out making minimum wage, so outside of the salon, I worked other jobs for 5 years to stay afloat. My now husband and I moved in together and with his support and encouragement, my career finally took off.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Wae Studio?
I help people appreciate their authentic beauty with maintainable color, extensions, and custom brow design. Over my 15 years in the industry, I’ve learned how having fine and thin hair can impact the self-confidence of a person. Some are simply born with less hair, and some experience the shift in hair health from hormonal changes. It is heartbreaking. This happens with both hair and eyebrows. I’m dedicated to finding the root of the problem with each guest and treating it from the inside out. A healthy scalp grows healthy hair! I have developed color placement techniques that make the hair appear thicker, like an optical illusion. I also use extension methods that cause no damage and appear incredibly natural. My brow services create a natural, full-looking brow through specialty treatments. Permanent makeup for eyebrows has become very mainstream, which does have it’s place, but I like to see what I can do to help my guests naturally before they give up too quickly and resort to permanent tattoos.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
I grew up in a small town where my best friends lived in my neighborhood. It was the kind of place where mom would just open the door and shout your name when it was time for dinner. We walked to and from Elementary school together every day and had some awesome summers making popsicles, biking to the city pool, and doing our paper routes together. I think my work ethic and determination came with starting my first job, the paper route, in 4th grade. These are still my dearest friends today. We still laugh about not knowing how easy life was then.
