Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Cevette.
Hi Susan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story, like all of our stories, isn’t a quick and easy one. I was raising two kids and negotiating my way out of an unhealthy marriage when I decided to change my career trajectory and become a financial advisor. After more than 20 years doing this work, now, I can safely say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I started out in the publishing world but realized I wanted — and needed — more freedom and flexibility in my work. I also realized I had a knack for digging deep into people’s concerns and fears and helping them get to the root of what was really bothering them. And, I love numbers. I love statistics. I love researching possibilities and trends — financial advising was a pretty obvious choice.
Several years ago, I decided to take my career to the next level. I wanted to start doing things in a different way than has been traditionally done in the financial services industry — I wanted to work with clients to help them build a values-based financial plan. I also wanted to work with clients to help them understand how to feel more connected with their investments and more comfortable with the financial decisions they were making. So I left my former firm and started my own boutique advisory shop — WatersEdge Wealth Management.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, no it hasn’t been a smooth road! Once I decided to leave an established and well-known branded financial services company, starting my own business was a huge learning curve.
Instead of simply having to be the best advisor possible with a team of people who supported me, I now had to learn how to grow without the large firm name on the door, how to market my firm and differentiate from others, how to hire people who wanted to do the kind of work we do, how to direct my new team…entrepreneurship is no walk in the park and it’s not for everyone.
And I love it!
And then, of course, a little something called Covid 19 showed up, too. The repercussions of the global pandemic have been more than a little challenging for the market so that’s been a new challenge as well. However, while it HAS been a challenge, I have learned more about reliance and demonstrated even more tenacity than I knew I had.
You know, it’s hard to make a big change when you’re in the midst of raising two young kids on your own. I knew, though, that I had to make a change for them as well as for myself so I kept pushing forward. And as I forged ahead, I learned and my kids learned from me. When you demonstrate living your passion, your children take note and do the same.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Many smart, strong women, makers, and innovators want to feel more connected to their money and have a better understanding of their investments. They are looking for a financial plan that informs their day-to-day decision-making with a long-term view. That’s why I created WatersEdge Wealth Management as a place where you can develop trust, connection, control, and knowledge. I help you intentionally grow your wealth in alignment with your values and goals; this creates well-being and peace of mind.
I have a vision of a new model of economic freedom for women, makers, and innovators where together we make conscious financial decisions from a place of knowledge, strength, and security. This helps to create a world where we all actively engage and contribute to the things we care about, the communities we live in, and the people we love.
With nearly two decades of experience and an MBA from the University of Saint Thomas, I address my work with a tested and flexible toolkit of professional knowledge. I live in Minneapolis and share a passion for the arts with my two adult children.
What does success mean to you?
Success, to me, is all about positively impacting others. How can I help someone make their life feel better so that they can live their passion and purpose? Success means waking up every day loving my work and knowing it makes a difference.
True success also involves balance and moderation. And most importantly having people to love and be loved. When you are living an authentic life, true to yourself, I truly believe everything follows — even money.
