Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenna Salmi
Hi Brenna, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My photography journey began with a deep love for capturing moments, which started when I was a kid. My grandpa and mom were always the ones with cameras, documenting memories, and I loved being able to look back on those photos and cherish the memories. At 13, I got my first camera and started taking photos with my friends. Back then, I had not the slightest clue that photography could be a career, but I loved the joy it brought me.
Fast forward to a time in my life where I was feeling a little lost and disconnected. My now-husband encouraged me to pick up my camera again, and that was a game-changer. In 2020, I decided to dive into photography, capturing people’s stories and emotions through my lens. I took what I had learned over the years, both from my personal experiences and my nursing background, and began building my business.
Today, I’m lucky enough to work with amazing couples, families and seniors who appreciate the value of capturing those memories!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I think that’s what makes it so rewarding. Starting a business, especially one in a creative field, has its fair share of challenges. There were times when I felt uncertain—trying to find my footing, figuring out the right direction, and wondering if I was doing the right thing. I didn’t have a clear “blueprint” to follow, so a lot of it was trial and error. I’ve learned a lot along the way, especially about balancing creativity with the business side of things.
One of the biggest struggles was actually shifting my mindset. I used to let doubts and fears hold me back, wondering if I was good enough or if clients would take me seriously. Overcoming that internal battle was a big part of my growth. Another challenge was learning how to really connect with my ideal clients and market myself authentically. But as I grew and stayed true to my values, things started falling into place.
It’s definitely been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and perseverance. But each challenge has shaped me into the photographer I am today, and I wouldn’t change a thing about the process.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Brenna Jean Photography?
I specialize in capturing real, emotive moments through photography, focusing on elopements, weddings, and lifestyle sessions like maternity, family, and senior photos. What sets me apart is my emphasis on connection and experience, not just the photos themselves. My clients know me for my warm, down-to-earth personality, natural editing style, and how I make each session feel like we’ve been friends for years.
What makes my business unique is the combination of my background as a nurse and my love for the outdoors. I bring a sense of empathy and understanding into every session, which helps my clients feel seen and heard. I’ve always loved the natural beauty of the North Shore of Minnesota, and that connection to nature comes through in my work.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my clients. I take pride in the fact that they trust me to capture some of their most important moments. I think my brand stands out because it’s centered around authenticity and creating an experience that feels personal and real. I want readers to know that when they work with me, they’re not just getting beautiful photos—they’re getting a photographer who cares about their experience and strives to make each moment meaningful.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory has to be spending time at our cabin – four wheeling, hiking, snowshoeing, or just simply spending time with family and friends. It’s entertaining to me now because I actually live 15 minutes away from my childhood cabin, where many of my favorite memories came from!
