Inspiring Conversations with Brittany Taylor of Black Luxe Candle Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Taylor.

Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I didn’t choose this candle life… this candle life chose me.

It all started in December of 2018 when I was preparing Christmas gifts. That year, I decided to do something more personal and thought, you know what, I’m going to make gifts myself. I ended up creating what I called a self-care kit it included a little bottle of wine, a coloring book, and a candle I made from a kit I’d ordered off Amazon.

After Christmas, people started asking if I sold candles or could teach them how to make their own. And honestly, I laughed.. because I didn’t even really know how to make a candle yet! But those questions stuck with me. I was working in corporate at the time, and something in me said, maybe this is your chance to build something that’s truly yours.

So in January 2019, Black Luxe was born!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road of Black Luxe has honestly been pretty smooth with only minor hiccups along the way. This business started as a creative project, so my love for it has always been natural. It became my muse. I truly believe it continues to grow because it was built for the people and fueled by the encouragement of the community.

In April 2020, I lost my full-time corporate job right before I was supposed to close on my first multi-unit property. I was devastated, but when I shared my story online, the community showed up for me in a big way. Their support gave me the strength to keep going and focus on building my business. The challenge then became figuring out how to sell candles online while everyone was stuck inside during the COVID lockdown. I decided to start going live to share my journey, and that idea ended up working better than I ever imagined.

We faced supply shortages during the shutdown, but we stayed adaptable and continued pushing forward.

A more personal challenge came in May 2021 when I started losing my hearing rapidly. By September, we had decided to open our first storefront, and I was nervous about how much of my hearing I had already lost. With the support of my husband and the community that had believed in me from the start, I pressed forward and opened the store. That moment reminded me that resilience is built in the process, not just the outcome.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Black Luxe Candle Co.?
Black Luxe Candle Co. is more than a candle brand. It’s an experience rooted in self-care, creativity, and community. We specialize in hand-poured candles, wax melts, and immersive candle-making experiences that bring people together through scent and storytelling.

What sets us apart is our focus on connection. Every class and product is designed to help people slow down, express themselves, and create something meaningful. We don’t just sell candles; we create moments, from our in-store candle-making sessions to our custom scent experiences that let guests design fragrances that reflect who they are.

I’m most proud that our brand has become a space where luxury meets authenticity. Our customers come for the candles but stay for the experience, the laughter, and the sense of belonging.

Black Luxe is for anyone who values intention, creativity, and community. Whether you light one of our candles at home or join us for a class in our Chicago ( Wicker Park ) store, the goal is always the same: to remind you that self-care can be beautiful, grounding, and personal.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is the power of patience, rest, and self-belief. There will be times when people don’t understand your vision, and that’s okay. It wasn’t given to them; it was given to you. I’ve learned that protecting your peace and trusting your process are just as important as the work itself. When you believe in yourself and the vision you were called to create, everything begins to align in its own time.
