Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Nicholas.
Hi Derek, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Food has always been the driving force in my life, but when it came to indigenous foods that interest blossomed in 2017 when I was gifted a ancient seed bundle. Caring for those seeds is a big responsibility, a part of that responsibility is growing those seeds. This was the spark to my indigenous foods journey. After a few years learning about domestic native foods elders came into my life who began teaching me about the wild foods. Now a majority of my work revolves around the wild beings, in which, those elders say I am responsible to pass on that knowledge
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Yes, its been a smooth road. The work around wild beings is needed in many communities, so the engagement and work has been well-received. The only challenges are combatting and adapting to the changes were are seeing on the land, such as, microclimates, plant and animal migrations, rules and regulations to gathering, etc.
As you know, we’re big fans of Wiisinig LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The best advice I have for finding a mentor or networking is to get out in the community, and be helpful. When you radiate goodness, goodness will find you
