Inspiring Conversations with Dr. Rebecca Troy of Retrain the Dyslexic Brain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Rebecca Troy.

Dr. Rebecca Troy

Hi, Dr. Rebecca. We’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
In my unexpected journey to rewiring Dyslexic Brains as a teacher for 20 years, I intimately understood the frustration of brilliant students, their minds seemingly trapped by dyslexia. No child, I believed, should ever feel their mind is ‘broken.’ Yet, the traditional tactics we employed rarely sparked lasting change. It was this deep empathy for these learners that led me to earn a doctorate in education, focusing on the neuroscience behind dyslexia and the treatment possibilities to reorganize and rewire the way a brain with dyslexia hears and responds to language. I taught future teachers innovative techniques at the university and public school levels for a decade. But I longed to directly impact on a grander scale.

It was during the implementation of my early dyslexia work in high school classrooms that insights indeed crystallized. Diving deep into neuroscience revolutionized how I understood the roots of dyslexia and the power and possibility of neuroplasticity. An idea took hold – what if, through repetition, the brain of a child with dyslexia could be reorganized within months instead of struggling in tutoring or interventions for years?

Armed with two decades in the classroom, a wealth of further study, and a mission to advocate for neurodivergent minds, I launched Retrain the Dyslexic Brain. Using multisensory exercises uniquely tailored to wiring patterns, we witnessed outcomes that surpassed all expectations. Families worldwide now turn to our brain-based methods, finding light where there were shadows. Each breakthrough reduction in anxiety brings me joy like none other. My unlikely journey has come full circle – from teacher to pioneer, directly empowering thousands globally. If one mind can be unlocked, imagine the ripple effects and imagine a world where every individual can achieve their full, brilliant potential. That is the vision that drives me each and every day.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While my passion drove me forward, the road to get here was uncertain. Leaving a school I loved with steady work to forge an unknown path was intimidating. Many nights, I wondered if I was truly making the right choice. In the early days of launching Retrain the Dyslexic Brain, I brought their unique challenges, too. Building a brand and website from scratch required many newbie skills to be developed quickly. While I knew my craft inside and out, marketing, advertisement, copywriting, sales, and funnels were just a few of the many new and sometimes daunting skills I needed to learn. Those first few clients took courage to acquire, with no reputation yet to stand on. Yet each family’s meaningful progress report or heartfelt thank you only confirmed what I knew was true. I wouldn’t quit on the kids who needed alternatives the most. This work was and is very important, and our mission to equip families with the tools they need to support their children is essential. While the path wasn’t predictable, staying patient through challenges prepared me for more significant victories and a larger purpose. For me, the biggest challenge was just getting started.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk about work. What should we know?
We help dyslexic children retrain their brains to hear and respond differently to language. Dr. Troy, a mother of two and an expert in educational neuroscience, specializes in dyslexia treatments. She holds a doctorate in education, researches neuroscience and reading disabilities, and is a Nationally Board Certified early and middle literacy teacher. Known for her tenacious, nurturing approach, Dr. Troy brings advanced dyslexia interventions into homes, making them accessible and practical for families.

While many people erroneously assume that supporting dyslexia is best accomplished through tutoring, the truth is that these systems don’t leverage the power of neuroplasticity to efficiently and efficiently rewire neural circuitry. Those with dyslexia have neurological deficits in both the occipital and parietal-temporal areas of their brain that impact both sight and sound, but only during language tasks. This is why, for example, people with dyslexia will often add or omit letters when spelling, work hard to decode a word and then forget it one line later, have trouble sounding out words, and sometimes even remember oral sequences.

This misfire between sight and sound can often cause frustration, anxiety, feelings of hopelessness like they are never going to get it right, negative self-talk, poor academic outcomes, lack of motivation, etc., that can often lead to many adverse life outcomes. It’s important to know, however, that the brain is malleable. Targeting dyslexia at its source and strengthening weakened brain areas responsible for language processing can happen efficiently (within months, not years). Reorganizing how the brain hears and responds to language gives parents peace of mind, leaving their children confident and independent with reading and writing tasks. Most children with dyslexia have average or above-average intelligence and many superpowers in thinking and processing. Supporting the one area neurologically holding them back often unlocks an entire world of greatness and possibility.

Before we go, can you talk to us about how people can work, collaborate, or support you?
Sometimes, parents suspect things may be “off,” especially if the child isn’t meeting developmental milestones or is struggling to keep up with peers at school. Sometimes diagnostic testing can be expensive, and the waitlist can be months long, so we have screening tools available on our website https://www.drrebeccatroy.com that will allow you to dig deeply into your child’s current percentiles for phonological awareness, reading, and spelling. While not an official diagnosis, this data is accurate and can be corroborated with other observations and data to plan the next steps and interventions.

Otherwise, if you are sure your child is currently experiencing issues with reading and spelling, we recommend that you do the following:

  1. Book a complimentary breakthrough call.
  2. We’ll assess if our program can address your specific challenges effectively.
  3. We consider clients who are committed and a good fit for our community.
  4. We’ll discuss program details, coaching, and costs if it’s a match.

We aim to guide you in making the right choice. Are we the solution you’ve been seeking? Schedule your call here:
