Inspiring Conversations with Elise Foley of Light and Shade

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elise Foley.

Hi Elise, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For years, I considered myself a healthy person. I lived an active lifestyle, stayed busy, and played volleyball regularly. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, I began experiencing a long list of symptoms including seizures, memory loss, vision changes, slurred speech, kidney failure, fatigue, pain, bruising, and more. My life changed dramatically. There was a period of time when I was relying on others just to get through daily life. Like many people facing chronic health challenges, I spent years searching for answers. I met with doctors, tried different approaches, and kept hoping I would find something that would help me feel like myself again. While I didn’t always find the answers I was looking for or instant relief, I discovered something unexpected along the way. I was introduced to Craniosacral Therapy, a gentle bodywork technique that helps to calm the nervous system. I also discovered Energy Healing at one of the hardest seasons of my life. these modalities became an important part of my journey to wellness and gave me a sense of hope when I needed it the most. The more I learned, the more I became fascinated by the body’s ability to heal and the connection between our physical, emotional, and energetic well-being. Eventually, my healing journey turned into a career and as I was learning these modalities, I was also healing through them. What started for a search for help became a desire to help others. Today, I love creating spaces where people can slow down, feel supported, and reconnect with themselves. Sometimes people simply need someone to listen to, a moment to breathe, or a reminder that healing is possible. Beyond my wellness work, I am also an author and have published three books inspired by my experiences and the lessons I’ve learned along the way. Creativity has always been a big part of who I am, whether that’s through writing, wellness, workshops, or helping others bring their ideas to life. Looking back, I wouldn’t have chosen the challenges I went through, but they gave me a deeper sense of understanding and compassion, purpose, and appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. Today, my work is rooted in helping others find hope, healing, and a path forward whatever that may look like for them.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges was navigating my own health journey while trying to figure out who I was and what direction I wanted my life to take if I was given the chance to become healthy again. For a long time, I felt like I was searching not only for answers about my health, but also for my purpose. There were periods where my symptoms made it difficult to work, make plans, or known what the future would look like. Health is truly taken for granted until you’re forced to confront how much it impacts every aspect of your life. Learning to adapt while living in uncertainty and learning how to chase my fears required a great deal of resilience and patience. Starting a business comes with it’s own challenges as well. Building something from the ground up takes time, consistency, and a willingness to keep going even when progress feels slow or confusing. It was important for me to find balance, stay centered, and trust the process even when I couldn’t see the road ahead. Looking back, these experiences taught me resilience, adaptability, and self trust. They also pushed me to lean on my mindset, inner strength, and positivity in ways I never had before.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Light and Shade is a holistic wellness practice centered around nervous system support, relaxation, and whole person healing. I specialize in Craniosacral Therapy, a gentle hands on modality that helps to release tension within the body and supports the body’s natural ability to heal and self- regulate. I also offer Energy Healing, guided meditation, wellness workshops, web design, branding, social media management, and digital marketing support for small businesses and entrepreneurs. The name Light and Shade reflects an important belief at the heart of my work: we cannot fully appreciate the light without experiencing the shade. Life naturally contains both joy and challenge and healing often comes from learning how to navigate both with compassion and awareness. My mission is to help people find their light during times of shade and create space to heal, create, and expand.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve learned that some of the most meaningful opportunities exist on the other side of fear. I believe that chasing your fears is important, meaning acknowledging it and moving forward anyway. I’ve continued to lean into opportunities that push me outside of my comfort zone, sharing my story, and pursuing new ideas and passions before feeling ready. I believe that growth rarely happens when everything feels safe and certain. Some of the greatest lessons, connections, and accomplishments come from taking chances on yourself. Even when things don’t go as planned there’s always something valuable to learn. My approach to risk is simple: if something excites me and scares me at the same time, it’s usually worth exploring. Fear has become less of a stop sign and more of a compass pointing me toward growth.
