Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Godfrey.
Hi Heather, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you so much for this opportunity! I grew up in the sweetest community—Alexandria, MN—and moved back here a little over 15 years ago. From a young age, I was always active, playing sports and living each day to its fullest. I have vivid memories of going with my mom to the fitness classes she taught—I would join in and absolutely loved it. I believe that’s where I first experienced how powerful movement is and the positive impact it can have on our lives, at any age.
In my 20s, I started attending fitness classes regularly, and it completely changed the trajectory of my life. I would leave each class feeling confident, strong, and energized. I knew I wanted to always feel that way—and I knew I wanted to help others experience it too.
One of my favorite quotes is from Rumi: “There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.” I felt that voice, and I believed it was God’s calling to pursue this dream. I hit the ground running to earn my certifications and learn everything I could about becoming a trainer and instructor.
After completing my certifications, one opportunity led to another. I started teaching group fitness classes, opened a fitness clothing boutique, launched a full-service gym, became a master trainer for Beachbody, partnered with a nutrition company, appeared on the cover of a fitness DVD and in a fitness infomercial, and spoke on several stages. I also completed multiple races, triathlons, and fitness competitions—placing 2nd nationally in Las Vegas at my last one. It’s been an incredibly fun journey.
The birth of our son, Griffin (now 8), gave me a whole new perspective. Becoming a mother helped me truly understand the challenges so many people face in trying to find time for the gym. That realization inspired me to create my fitness app, Commit[365]—a platform that allows people to take “classes” with me anytime, from anywhere.
I continue to teach in-person classes and train a few one-on-one clients, which I love. That in-person community means so much to me. But having the ability to offer on-demand workouts and support through the Commit[365] app has allowed me to expand my reach and make a bigger impact. It’s also brought more flexibility to my life so I can be the best mom I can be to Griffin—which is the greatest gift of all.
I just turned 40 this year, and while I feel incredibly blessed to have experienced so much already and I truly believe I’m just getting started. I’m endlessly grateful to my family, friends, and community who have supported me every step of the way.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been a smooth road?
Oh goodness—there have been many challenges! I always remind myself not to view them as a negative thing. Every journey, personally and professionally, will have ups and downs for each of us. Our perspective and resilience when we face those moments is everything (something I’m still always working on myself!).
Each challenge has taught me something—how to handle things better in the future, how to grow personally, how to be more persistent, or when to pivot. There’s always something positive to be learned, even from the tough moments. That’s business, that’s life.
I believe that overcoming challenges not only shapes us but also allows us to lead with more empathy and less judgment. Everyone is doing the best they can with the tools they have. When we can view people and challenges that way, it makes our outlook even more beautiful.
We’re big fans of Commit[365]. For readers who might not be familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
