Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Splinter
Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Chile but was adopted and raised in a small, conservative town in Minnesota. Growing up, I always had a creative side and was drawn to beauty, but I didn’t see many people who looked like me or shared my background in the industry. That actually motivated me even more—to create the kind of space I never had. I started working in a salon at a young age, building experience and relationships, and eventually opened Salon Oriana, named to reflect light, warmth, and beauty. It’s now been 9 years of owning this space, and I’m proud to say it’s become a home for all kinds of people—clients and artists alike.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a business is never easy, but doing it as a single mom, while navigating the layers of identity, family, and leadership, has taught me resilience in a whole new way. I’ve faced burnout, financial stress, and moments of self-doubt, but I’ve also learned how strong I really am. I’ve rebuilt systems, revamped my entire home with my own hands, and kept my vision alive through some really tough seasons. Every time I thought I might give up, I reminded myself that I’m building something not just for myself, but for my kids and my community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My work is deeply personal. Salon Oriana isn’t just a place to get your hair done—it’s an inclusive, affirming space that blends artistry with authenticity. We work with all hair types, celebrate individuality, and take pride in being a boutique salon with a strong focus on sustainability and clean beauty. Beyond working behind the chair, I also mentor new stylists, helping them refine their skills, build confidence, and navigate the industry. I know how hard it can be to start out, so creating a supportive environment where stylists can grow and thrive has become one of the most rewarding parts of my career. I want people—both clients and my team—to feel safe, seen, and stylish, whether they’re stepping into the salon for a transformation or stepping into their careers for the first time.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Give yourself grace—you’re not going to know everything right away, and that’s okay. Growth takes time, and every stylist you admire was once a beginner too. Stay open to learning, take feedback as a tool to improve, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Building confidence behind the chair comes with experience, so focus on consistency rather than perfection. Surround yourself with people who inspire and support you, and always keep your passion for the craft alive. The more you invest in your skills and your client relationships, the more your career will flourish.
