Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Giberson Jr.
Hi Jonathan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So, how does someone go from graduating from a music college to starting up Cowboy Cannabis Company?
It started with the opportunity to purchase my grandparents ranch in 2017. After moving onto the ranch, I decided to attend Central Lakes College in Statples to get an agronomy degree. After all, I had 40 acres of land and was determined to turn it into something that would sustain my family and our way of life. Little did I know that would be learning as much as I can about the growing cannabis industry and its introduction into the Minnesota market. Determined to be on the cutting edge of that growing Minnesota industry – I embraced it fully.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with any new industry, and especially the cannabis industry, there are new rules and regulations that constantly pop up and you have to be on op or each of them. It is a real challenge to stay on top of a new industry with so many rules and regulations that need to be adhered to. But again that is just part of what I do each day to keep myself busy.
Minnesota started accepting business plans last year and we applied for a micro business license. It has been a long process to get all of the information submitted and then comes the waiting game. We are hopeful that this next round of licenses that will be granted in 2025, that our name will be one of them. We are eager to get started full time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
As the owner and head of Cowboy Cannabis Company I spend most of my days tending to the few plants that I can grow on the ranch. Experimenting with different varieties of seeds; and each plant is tended by me every day. From planting the seeds, to watering them, to making sure the light, ph, ec and soil moisture content is right, and the temperature – its an every day challenge to make sure that everything is working properly to get a final product that is not just average, but exceeds expectations in every possible way.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
It started with the soil. I adjusted an existing soil recipe and made a few customizations to make it mine. The soil was a great way to start the growth process, literally from the ground up to create a soil that would sustain and exceed growth expectations for a limited number of plants that I was able to grow.
Surprisingly – other growers started asking about it and that is how Cowboy Cultivation Company began and partnered with Cowboy Cannabis Company. Currently, we have our soil in several local and outstate Minnesota stores.
