Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Katherine Shephard.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started my career in physical therapy in outpatient pediatrics but quickly added pelvic health to my skills and caseload. I started seeing adults and pediatric patients with pelvic health concerns within a year of graduating and haven’t looked back. I found my people. When the clinic I was working for laid off half of its staff at the outset of the Pandemic, I chose to start my own practice. During the past two years, I have treated patients virtually and have been pleasantly surprised at how successful that could be in pelvic health. I will continue to treat virtually, as well as seeing patients in person in their home and, soon, in a physical location, which is TBD.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like just about everything over the past two years, it has not been a smooth road. In the two years since founding New Normal Physical Therapy, I have given birth to my third daughter, helped my older two daughters in distance learning, and supported my husband, who taught from home until this school year. This left little time for advertising and marketing, but I am hopeful for the future.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
New Normal PT is a physical therapy practice treating people with pelvic health concerns. I treat adults and pediatrics. I especially enjoy helping people who are pregnant/postpartum and kiddos. I also teach at St. Kates, lead workshops, and mentor other providers. As a mother of three daughters, I often can relate to parents on many levels.
We are working toward a world where pelvic health is better understood and demystified — not shrouded in fear and shame, but illuminated by empowerment and strength. We work toward a new normal for our patients and pelvic health physical therapy.
We believe in the power of listening to our patients and their stories. We are experts in our field and believe our patients are the experts in their body and journey. We like to work together with our patients to reach the best results.
What does success mean to you?
Naturally, we want our patients to feel better and resume their favorite activities. But we are truly successful when our patients leave the clinic with a new understanding of what is possible for their bodies. With pelvic problems, people are often given the impression that there’s nothing to be done. Even worse, they feel shameful about or disappointed in their bodies. But our bodies are strong, capable, adaptable, and resilient. We help our patients find the changes that make a difference instead of resigning themselves to discomfort.
