Inspiring Conversations with Madison Simon of Flower Power Wax

Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison Simon

Hi Madison, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up a dancer. I danced from the age of 4 to the age of 14. After a concussion brought my dancing chapter to a close, I went on to face other health challenges; such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. I spent a lot of time at home during this period, and found myself using getting ready, such as playing with skin care and makeup, helped me still have some of my identity. It brought me peace and it brought me confidence. Due to my health issues, I struggled to graduate high school with my attendance being so low, but after I did, I went straight to beauty school. I went in expecting to leave with specializing in skin care and makeup, but I left wanting to start my career in waxing. I truly found a passion for connecting with women, helping them embrace themselves more, showing them that they can do hard things, along with things that might be intimidating. After graduation, I went on to work at a waxing chain, and then to work in a salon setting. After struggling to find my place in the beauty community, and even considering switching fields, I decided to give waxing one more shot, but this time independently; and Flower Power Wax was born.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Well, if everything was “smooth”, then I wouldn’t be in business. All jokes aside, my biggest struggle was finding a space that I felt confident and like myself in. So therefore, I created one. I feel that the beauty industry can be really unfair to those who are in it. We are taught and conditioned to put everyone else’s comfort before ours. To preach confidence without knowing where ours is. And of course, to never show emotion. After creating my ideal workspace, learning how to prioritize my comfort, and finding my confidence, I had to face what was happening outside of work. My marriage was now at the forefront; I was divorced by 24. I am a firm believer in “sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same”.
However, in the mists of no longer knowing what “home” looked like or felt like, I always had my workspace. A place that was my own. Something consistent and familiar. It’s truly where I did the most healing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am a licensed esthetician, but body waxing is all I use to license for. I specialize in brazilian waxing, and truthfully, I would say that I am known for “not making it hurt”, even though I truly could not tell you what I do that’s special, but whatever it is, it’s working!! I believe there is a waxer/esthetician out there for everybody. I am the type of waxer that likes to connect with my clients on more of a friendship level. I tend to factor in “talking time” to all my appointments, because the girl hood that is established is priceless. I have met people that will be in my life forever, through my job. I do what I do because women empowerment is everything to me and my passion for that runs deeply, but the reassurance that I am doing things right came when I was voted best waxer in St. Cloud by St. Cloud Community Votes after just barely a year of being independent. I think the last time I was that proud of myself, was when I graduated beauty school.
Although I specialize in brazilian waxing, if you aren’t ready for that, you can start with just your bikini line (your underwear line), or you can do what is called a modified brazilian, which is essentially what shows under a swimsuit. Or if that’s not your jam and you just want your legs or underarms smooth, I gotchu there too. It’s your body, your hair, whatever makes you feel confident is what I want for you!

What matters most to you?
My peace. When you choose yourself, everything around you will choose you too.
