Today we’d like to introduce you to Meagan Thomas Betz.
Meagan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am an RN (registered nurse) with ten years of experience in hospice care and education. Prior to my nursing career, I operated as an LMT (Licensed Massage Therapist) for hospice patients in rural MN. Working with patients gave me such joy and I wanted more which lead me to go back to school for my BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing). As my nursing career progressed, I added Usui Reiki master to my holistic nursing work which is the energy technique I use in the Zen Den to help clients with grounding, lessen anxiety, grief and much more.
Over the last several years, I have recognized a greater need for holistic nursing in our communities to bridge the gap of individualized healthcare. This recognition occurred after a personal experience with a mental health crisis in which I struggled to find help with traditional western philosophies alone. After months of searching and thousands of dollars spent with no answers, I started looking toward integrative approaches including reiki, acupuncture and nature. These tools saved my relationships, my job and my life.
My goal in this work is to give people back control over their health, give you tools for healing, so that no person has to endure the same experiences that I did. Currently, I work as a professional practice nurse with a local non-profit, as a holistic nurse, reiki therapist and massage therapist. I am a board-certified holistic nurse and use my master’s degree in ethics and compliance to do work that serves the individual and not myself.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been really fortunate in my life to have access to the education that interests me and a supportive partner that mirrors my excitement for adventures. I would describe the journey as a paved road with a handful of potholes. The experiences that I would consider struggles have also led me to opportunities and people that have changed my life for the better. One of those potholes led me to my mentor Dawn Featherston, one of the most brilliant nurses I have ever met, Carolyn Cochran, giving me tools for introspection and spiritual growth.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The Zen Den is Treatment That Travels. We know that time is an asset and it can be difficult to get the support you need. We travel to you and provide holistic services such as reiki, massage, sound bathing, cupping and nurse coaching. These services can be used in combination or independently and used to assist in grief, relaxation, healing and grounding.
The Zen Den: a traveling trailer that allows you to escape your home but not have to necessarily leave it. The Den is a cozy room where I hold space for you during our time together.
Reiki: I am a Usui Reiki Master which is a form of energy work with Japanese roots. The energy work helps to provide balance to your energy systems, enhance relaxation and assist you in healing yourself.
Massage: I have been a licensed massage therapist since 2004 and use the bodywork modality to ease body ailments as well as work on fascia release.
Sound bathing: This is a modality that uses crystal singing bowls, chimes, drums and sometimes more to help activate the alpha waves of the brain to enhance overall wellbeing, reduce stress, enhance sleep and reduce anxiety.
Cupping: Vacuum cupping is a form of cupping where vacuum pressure is applied to cups on specific areas of the body to help manipulate the muscle and fascia. This modality can help with tension release, The goal is to promote healing.
Nurse Coaching: I am a registered nurse and board-certified holistic nurse. We start with an assessment of your current concerns and establish a plan of interventions to meet your well-being needs.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is that everyone is seen as an individual. That they are heard and cared for based on their specific needs to achieve overall wellness and alignment of the whole self-based on individual goals. I care about people. I care about providing them tools to heal and an avenue to access these tools.
