Inspiring Conversations with Natalie Pierson of Vagbond Village or Shorthand, The Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Pierson.

Hi Natalie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I opened Vagabond Village ten years ago. It started out with a small vintage collection and a dream to support the underserved community through small business internships for young people and community partnerships.

Vagabond Village has funded and hosted community sales and other fundraisers in support of Veterans, animal rescue, local unhoused support, student school projects, and youth entrepreneurial practice. We just met the 60-student internship mark.

We believe in creating and implementing community groups, both social and trade, bringing disparate people with similar interests to do good things. A few of our favorites: sewing classes, art expression, Zero Waste free clothing drives, and fashion photography clubs for students. We love giving opportunities to people to teach classes, host events, learn work skills, and build confidence while reusing textiles and upcycling hard goods. Our goal is to run a sustainable business while helping people grow independent from institutional systems that block personal development of true authenticity and artistic expression.

At this ten-year mark, The Village’s new journey will feature special collections of amazing local finds and those from all over the world.

The Village is developing into a safe haven for “the others” in the community – those who think and see the world differently and wish to live in kindness. We want to draw in people who have the vision and desire to manifest abundance and who want to help make better use of materials to reduce waste and uplift each other through service.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Follow your vision and intuition. Stay your course even though others say you’re in the wrong lane. There is room and abundance enough for everyone. Be honest. Follow through with your commitments.
