Inspiring Conversations with Sam Leverson of The Leverson Group | Edina Realty

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sam Leverson.

Hi Sam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
In my childhood, I grew up moving every 1 to 3 years between Upper Peninsula Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Later in my childhood, when I could actually comprehend the real estate process, I always found it fascinating. I was also that kid that was glued to HGTV instead of cartoons. It was one of those things that I was like, wow—what a cool job. So, in other words, real estate was a childhood dream of mine. However, coming out of high school, it’s not necessarily something that you think. I will be a realtor since I have zero life experience and the average age of a realtor is 57 years old. I ended up going to Mankato State for Elementary Education. Despite my love for learning and educating, I realized that was not the right path for me. I then turned to a job in restaurant management that came naturally to me. I still had that dream of real estate in the back of my mind, and many knew. Through a series of coincidental conversations that happened all on the same day, it was then, at the age of 22, that I knew it was time for a change. That change was real estate! I worked three jobs during the week and went to licensing school on the weekends for three months. That is where it all started. I found something I was passionate about where I was able to make a meaningful impact on others’ lives and help them through one of the most stressful processes they will ever endure. Looking back and seeing all of those “Angel Winks,” as I call them, continuously nudging me in the right direction humbles me and is something I am grateful for every day. Throughout my years in real estate and finding a love for marketing and technology, I have had the opportunity to speak in front of Edina Realty’s agents about the technology I use in my business. I have now been featured in multiple magazines. All of this is great. However, I still had a longing for mentoring and education.

I had the idea of starting a real estate team but never knew when the right time would be. Once I recruited a past client’s husband from another brokerage and took him under my wing, that is when I felt the spark. I still remember running up to my manager and asking her, “is this it? Is this my first team member?!” Well, he was my first team member. Now I have a team of myself and two other amazing agents. This has proved to be a new challenge for me now, balancing my business, personal life, and the success and progress of my team members. But, there are no two other agents I would rather have with me on this journey, and I am so grateful for them! In my free time, you will find me at CycleBar in Uptown, entertaining friends and family, or at one of the twin cities metro’s fabulous coffee shops and breweries!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. But life is about what we make of the challenges we face, and how we choose to react to those challenges shapes our success. Real estate is tough because people see it as a quick way to make a buck or that we are rolling in money. That is far from the truth. It’s not a business where you can advertise and sell something super quick with an instant return on your investment. It takes a lot of prospecting, consistency, and mental grit when we get a client GREAT! However, there have clients that I have worked with for almost two years before finding them a home! We don’t get paid until the transaction closes either, so it could still be a month or two before we see that return. So the mental and financial game of it all can wear on a person. I recall sitting in my manager’s office multiple times sobbing because I didn’t know if I could keep going. But here I am! The other challenge, especially in the past few years, is helping your clients through emotional turmoil in one of the hardest markets for buyers. The constant state of rejection they faced was so hard. I am an empath and feel others’ emotions, so it was tough to separate their emotions from mine and set the healthy boundaries I needed to keep going without compromising the quality of the service I offer my clients. Growing up and still today, I have always been the friend group therapist, which has definitely helped!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
This year I started on the journey of having a real estate team. We primarily focus on the western and southern suburbs but happily serve the greater MSP metro. In the industry and Edina Realty, we are known for the specific brand I have created for the past 5 years. This is also something I am personally proud of, as it was something I invested a lot of my time into and created myself. It’s a specific clean, elevated look that allows ourselves and our advertising properties to shine. I have been a very tech-heavy agent, always searching for better ways of marketing and expanding our client’s reach. With our listing package, you will get a staging consultation, professional photos, professional property video, awesome marketing from the best brokerage in the midwest, and guidance from a friendly face each step of the way!
