Inspiring Conversations with Sarah Cherry of Live Your Truth Yoga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Cherry

Sarah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to the work I do today has been a lifelong pursuit of peace and genuine happiness while navigating clinical depression and anxiety. From an uncommonly young age, I felt its weight—though at six years old, with my limited understanding, I could only describe it as “my sad feeling.”
As a child and teenager, basketball became my medicine, my escape. On the court, I found a sense of control, a reprieve from the torment in my mind. I became phenomenal, earning a full-ride scholarship to play college basketball at San Diego State University. But the accolades and sense of worth I built around the sport were fleeting. Beneath it all, I was silently suffering.
By my second year, unmedicated and battling crippling depression, I knew I needed help. I went to my coach and told him I needed medical support. He dismissed me, warning that medication could affect my performance, reminding me that I was an asset to the institution because of my full scholarship. At first, I listened. But when my struggles inevitably impacted my game, he turned on me—berating me in practice, humiliating me publicly. The final breaking point was a day when recruits and press were on-site. After a missed opportunity on a play, he got in my face, slapped the back of my head, and screamed, “Get your head out of your ass.”
I was a 21-year-old broken girl.
I knew I had to walk away—from basketball, my scholarship, school, and the identity I had built around it all. It was rock bottom. And it almost ended my life.
Seeking medical help was my turning point. Therapy and medication lifted the gray clouds, allowing me to see clearly for the first time. I transferred schools, finished my undergraduate degree, and earned an internship at the prestigious Mayo Clinic, studying and working in sports psychology. That experience ignited a new passion for understanding the mind. I excelled in personal training, pursued a graduate program in mental health counseling—but even then, something was missing.
I had explored healing through the body—sports, fitness, endurance training.
I had explored healing through the mind—psychology, therapy, academia.
Yet, I was still searching for something deeper.
Then I found yoga.
For the first time, I discovered an internal path to healing—one that wasn’t about pushing harder or achieving more but about being. Through breath, movement, and meditation, I realized that no one was coming to save me. I had to do that myself. And the experiences that once felt like devastation were actually the curriculum for my soul’s purpose.
This realization led to the birth of Live Your Truth Yoga—first in the jungles of Costa Rica, where I immersed myself in spiritual practice, and now, in the spaces I create for others seeking transformation.
As the founder of Live Your Truth Yoga, I guide seekers on a journey of self-discovery, healing, and empowerment—from the serene landscapes of Stillwater, Minnesota, to the lush Caribbean shores of Costa Rica and beyond. My teachings blend ancient yogic wisdom, modern neuroscience, and energetic healing, offering a grounded yet mystical approach to transformation. But more than anything, I hold sacred space—a space where you feel safe, seen, and celebrated as you are. Through authenticity, vulnerability, and deep reverence for the ancient traditions, I help you shed the masks, cut the cords of outdated beliefs, and reclaim your inner healer, guide, and guru.
No one outside of you holds your power—I simply help you remember.
Healing is possible. Your past does not define you. And within you, there is an unshakable truth waiting to be uncovered.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest struggles in my journey haven’t been external—they’ve been within me. And for that, I’m incredibly grateful. To be in a place where my own mind, my own doubts, and my own limitations are the greatest obstacles I face is, in many ways, a privilege. Because it means I have the power to shift, to grow, to step out of my own way.

For much of my life, I was at war with myself. I battled severe anxiety and depression from an early age, navigating a world that often felt too heavy, too loud, too overwhelming. I found solace in basketball, pouring everything into the game—until I lost myself in it. When I walked away from my full-ride scholarship and the identity I had built around being an athlete, I hit rock bottom. And yet, that breakdown became my breakthrough.

Even after finding yoga, my healing was not immediate. My mind still wanted to control, to achieve, to perfect. I would seek external validation instead of trusting my inner wisdom. Fear of failure, fear of not being enough, fear of success—ironically, they all kept me from fully stepping into my purpose.

Building Live Your Truth Yoga has been a process of continuously shedding those fears. Of remembering that I am not here to perform healing, but to embody it. To walk this path, not because I have all the answers, but because I am willing to keep learning, to keep evolving, to keep trusting.
My greatest struggle has always been myself. And my greatest gift has been realizing that I am also my own greatest solution.
