Today we’d like to introduce you to Talia Singer.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey into this work is deeply personal. Thirteen years ago, my dad died suddenly from a massive heart attack. Our family was thrown into grief, shock, and heartbreak — and at that time, I found it incredibly difficult to get connected to a grief counselor or find the kind of support we so desperately needed. There were long waitlists, limited options, and very few places that felt accessible during such a vulnerable moment.
At the time, I was already a social work major in college and knew that my path was to become a therapist. Losing my dad only strengthened that calling. It gave me a firsthand understanding of how critical timely, compassionate mental health care is — especially after sudden or unexpected loss or trauma.
Restorative Wellness Counseling was created from that experience and that need. I wanted to build a space where people could easily find support when they need it most — where immediate openings are available for clients who are struggling, grieving, or navigating a crisis, and where they can feel truly seen, supported, and safe to process and heal.
It was also very important to me to create a clinic where clients could look at our website and find a therapist they connect with — someone who may look like them, share a similar cultural, religious, or ethnic background, or understand their lived experience. Representation and connection matter deeply in the healing process.
Today, I feel incredibly grateful that Restorative Wellness Counseling has grown into a clinic of over 40 clinicians from a wide range of backgrounds and specialties. We serve children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, and we truly strive to meet clients where they are — connecting them with therapists who have the experience, training, and personal understanding to support their unique journey.
At its heart, Restorative Wellness Counseling is about creating a place where people don’t have to navigate their hardest moments alone — a place of compassion, accessibility, and genuine care during times when it matters most.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges early in my career was simply getting through the process of becoming fully licensed. Like many in this field, I spent years working as a case manager and provisionally licensed clinician, doing incredibly meaningful work while earning very little. It was a season that required a lot of sacrifice, patience, and persistence. I believed deeply in the work, but it was not an easy path financially or emotionally.
At the same time, I was navigating my own grief and personal growth, which made that period even more challenging. There were moments when it felt overwhelming to balance caring for others while also building stability for myself.
Another major obstacle came when I decided to open a private practice. There is very little formal training in business, leadership, or entrepreneurship in graduate school for therapists. I had to learn how to build and run a business largely on my own — from insurance credentialing and billing, to hiring, compliance, leases, payroll, marketing, and managing a growing team. Much of it was trial and error, late nights, and learning through experience.
Building a group practice brought a whole new set of challenges: creating systems, supporting clinicians, maintaining ethical and clinical excellence, and making sure the business side of things stayed sustainable so that we could continue serving the community. There were many moments where I had to stretch far beyond my comfort zone.
What carried me through was a strong sense of purpose. Every challenge reinforced why this work matters — not just for clients, but for clinicians as well. I wanted to create a practice that supports therapists too, so they can do their best work without burning out. Those early struggles shaped the kind of leader and clinic owner I am today, and they continue to guide how I run Restorative Wellness Counseling with compassion, integrity, and resilience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Restorative Wellness Counseling?
At Restorative Wellness Counseling, our mission is to provide compassionate, accessible, and high-quality mental health care to individuals and families across the Twin Cities. We now have two clinic locations, allowing us to serve both the western suburbs in Plymouth and the St. Paul area, and to better meet the growing needs of our community.
We are incredibly fortunate to have a large, diverse, and highly skilled team of therapists who bring a wide range of training, specialties, and lived experiences to their work. Our clinicians support children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, and provide care for concerns including trauma, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationship challenges, and more.
One area that is especially meaningful to me is our work with children. At our Plymouth location, we have two dedicated play therapy rooms, which allow us to support some of our most vulnerable clients in developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed ways. Play therapy creates a safe space for children to express emotions, process difficult experiences, and begin healing when words alone are not enough.
I am incredibly proud of our team. Each therapist brings deep compassion, professionalism, and heart into their work every day. Watching our clinicians show up for clients — often during some of the hardest moments of their lives — is truly inspiring. Restorative Wellness Counseling is not just a clinic; it is a community of providers who are deeply committed to helping people feel supported, understood, and empowered on their healing journey.
How do you think about happiness?
What brings me the most happiness is seeing people find support, healing, and hope during some of the hardest seasons of their lives. Knowing that Restorative Wellness Counseling can be a place where someone feels safe enough to be vulnerable, to grieve, to grow, and to begin healing is incredibly meaningful to me.
I also find deep joy in supporting our clinicians. Watching therapists grow in confidence, build meaningful careers, and feel supported in their work is just as important to me as client care. Creating a workplace where clinicians feel valued, connected, and able to do their best work brings me a lot of fulfillment.
On a personal level, happiness for me also comes from my family, community, and finding moments of presence and balance — whether that’s time with loved ones, being outdoors, or creating space to slow down and recharge. Those moments help ground me and remind me why this work matters.
