David Church shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi David, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
That’s a great question! I must say that one recent moment that I’m proud of is that I’m a part of an Emmy award-winning team. Back in April of 2025, I served as a video editor for my news station’s annual weather special, and in October of 2025, our station won an Emmy for that special. It was a real honor that we won it, and I never would have predicted to have my name attached to such a notable award. I felt both very proud of myself and the team who worked on the special.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure! I’m a man who has several passions and interests, including paleontology, railroad technology and history, cryptozoology, photography, and cooking and baking (to name but a few). I currently work for a TV news station in Rochester, Minnesota. I’ve been there for four years now, and it’s a workplace where I can blend certain skills as a filmmaker into a regular job.
Filmmaking is also one of my main interests, as is video making. I attended college at Santa Fe University of Art and Design, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in film production. But prior to receiving a formal education, I’ve alway been fascinated with film production. And ever since I was young, I’ve always been a storyteller, so it’s fun and fulfilling to share a visual story with the world, whether it’s a documentary or a cooking show on YouTube.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
Honestly, there are many facets to this question. I remember very early on, like when I was about three or four years old, that I was destined to either be a paleontologist or a firefighter. I believed that I was going to be very successful in either field. However, as I grew older, I quickly learned that neither paleontology or firefighting was my calling. I was about ten or eleven years old when I learned that I was destined for the arts, with film being my focus. And I’m glad I have stayed on that path.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
To be quite frank, one fear that held me back was that my work wasn’t worthy of any kind of recognition. I felt that even after pouring everything – heart, soul, and dedication – into a project, only for said project to be passed over in favor of something else, meant that it wasn’t very good. But as I have grown as an artist, I came to realize that even if your project doesn’t win a prize, or isn’t universally lauded like Citizen Kane, there’s that sweet feeling that there’s someone who will appreciate what you’ve done. And even having a small group of dedicated followers who always supports you and your work, whether they are your family or friends, is very heartwarming. It means that you have an audience, no matter what.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I’d say yes. Most people who know me (and know me very well) are aware of what makes me happy, what makes me tick, and where I stand on things. I have no problem with bringing aspects of my personal life into my professional life, particularly with my hobbies and interests, and I am always happy to share things like that with the public. Besides, there are definitely some instances where personal interests and a profession can go hand in hand, like making a film about one of your favorite subjects or something that has personal significance to you.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When do you feel most at peace?
I feel like I’m most at peace pursuing my passions and hobbies. Whether I am work on a film or video project (from writing, to filming, to editing, to release), taking photographs, or even doing different kinds of hobbies (like model railroads, painting figures, or putting together a costume), it’s very soothing and calming when I am doing something I love. I get to make art and share it with the world, so that always makes me smile.
