Today we’d like to introduce you to Allasondra Akwa.
Hi Allasondra, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
It’s hard to say where I started because I feel like I am still in that “starting” phase every day. I got my degree and began my career in broadcast journalism, before quickly realizing that local news was not going to fit. That was five years ago. Since then, I have worked in several different careers all in the Comms world. In the last year I have really honed in on my own social media presence. Not that curating others platforms wasn’t fulfilling… It just wasn’t as FUN. I love talking on the internet. I love people hearing and listening to my opinions. It’s why I went into the field I went in to. To circle back to where I am today. I am still unsure. Career wise I am in a stand still. Creatively, I couldn’t feel more inspired. I love to yap and chat and edit and get feedback. That has been the most fun part of the place I am in currently.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
NOOOOOOOO. It has not been smooth. AT ALL. I had to work extremely hard to get to where I did as a journalist. By 21 I was co-anchoring one of the biggest radio news shows in the midwest. I am so proud of my work there. It taught me a lot. But Like I said previously, now at 28, I still have no idea what direction I will be going in.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I have been doing social media for others and my own for over a decade. I’ve gotten really good at it. I can read algorithms without trying, I can edit a 5 minute video in less than 10 minutes, I have an eye for what people of all demographics will like. I am so proud of the skill I’ve acquired both on and off the camera. As for what sets me a part from others: The willing to do it. When it comes to social media and especially being willing to talk on a camera alone in your room or in front of a group in public, that is not an easy thing to do. I don’t take it lightly. But it was not innate. I had to build my own confidence. My favorite thing to remind myself of is just how big the world is and how small I really am. Nothing that I do matters and everything that I do matters– simultaneously.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My people. Above everything in the world I value humans and especially the humans I live every day life with. Second to that I would say I value experiences. I have travelled more in the last 5 years being out of journalism than I ever did before– and I am beyond grateful. Without traveling, domestically and abroad, we can’t and won’t escape our “bubbles”. I want to live in a world where everyone loves everyone and that can only happen if you give yourself the ability to experience all walks of life.
