Life & Work with America Ortiz

Today we’d like to introduce you to America Ortiz

Hi America, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, music has always had a profound impact on me. Whether it was listening to my mom singing lullabies to my little brother or turning the water hose into a makeshift microphone in my grandma’s yard, music has been my voice and an outlet for expressing intense emotions. As a teen, I delved deeper into my artistic identity. I thrived in school musicals, talent shows, and choirs, refining my skills as a vocalist and artist. Simultaneously, I embarked on my professional journey as a backup singer for my mom’s band, gaining invaluable insights into the music industry. I’m grateful for every experience that has led me to where I am today and that have shaped me into the artist I am today. I eagerly anticipate the artist I will evolve into.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been quite a journey with its fair share of bumps along the way. I understand how tough it can be to stay motivated, especially when it seems like others aren’t giving you the recognition you deserve. Trust me, I’ve grappled with those feelings too, and I know they may resurface in the future. It’s all part of being human, isn’t it? What I find helpful during those moments is reminding myself that my love for music doesn’t hinge on others’ opinions. I create music to express my emotions and find joy in it. When I share my music, I hope it resonates with someone else and brings them joy or peace. Focusing on this purpose helps me persevere through any challenges I encounter.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a Minnesota-based Mexican American singer/songwriter and the lead singer of the awesome Latin alternative group America y Los Sentimientos. Our bilingual band brings a unique blend of Pop, Rock, and Cumbia in English and Spanish. Our diverse musical and cultural influences from members from Mexico, El Salvador, and Wisconsin, combined with my roots in San Antonio, TX, makes us truly special. Despite our different backgrounds, we thrive on celebrating and incorporating the diversity each member brings into our music. Our latest single, “Vivir Así,” is on all streaming platforms, and we’re busy recording new material that genuinely showcases our blend of cultures and musical influences. Get ready because we can’t wait to share it with you all!

As the lead singer, I specialize in vocals and songwriting with my bandmates. I am known for delivering powerhouse vocals across any genre I perform. My mom, with her remarkable voice, has greatly influenced me and taught me so much. I’ve also drawn inspiration from legendary female vocalists such as Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Mon Laferte, Cristina Aguilera, and Selena. I’ve spent countless hours listening to their songs and live performances, meticulously studying their vocal runs and techniques. They inspire me to push myself to reach their vocal range and agility level.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Yes! Of course, I must mention the usuals like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube! Since starting my band, I’ve had to get to know them as more of a tool than just entertainment. These apps have been instrumental in building our following, connecting with fans, and getting our music to people who want to show their support but may not be able to come to a show in Minnesota. Social media is the ultimate marketing tool; it gives you access to anyone, no matter where they are in the world. Canva has also helped me develop my marketing skills a bit more. It is my primary app for creating show posters, video clips, and announcements. And lastly, Warm Ups with Kathleen. Kathleen Hansen is an online vocal coach that I found on YouTube. I really enjoy using her videos! The vocal warm-ups and exercises are to the point, and she does a great job explaining things that might confuse some. Once she came out with an app, I downloaded it immediately, and it has quickly become a part of my daily routine. It has been a great way to keep my voice healthy and strong.
