Life & Work with Angela Albee of St. Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Albee.

Hi Angela , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always been fascinated with marketing, especially after seeing the movie, Crazy People, starring Dudley Moore as an advertising executive who ends up in a mental institution after a nervous breakdown and ends up working with other patients to share the truth about advertising with some comical, and somewhat taboo, results. In the early 2000’s I worked at an ad agency as a proofreader, evolving into project and account management, with the occasional hand modeling as well for product packaging for items such as toilet cleaners, dish scrubbers, bandages and more. After seven years, I was laid off due to company reorganization. I found a position as a sales support person to the sales team at a promotional marketing company and found that I love everything about it, except for the fact that I was support and it was frowned upon if I interacted with the clients. I learned a lot in the short time I was there. One of the biggest things I learned was that I wanted to to that…sell promotional apparel and products. Starting at the bottom with no clients, I was able to find a position with a promotional company where the owner also had an embroidery shop. He offered me to work part-time at the shop in shipping/receiving while I built my book of business. For just over a decade, I built a great portfolio with a diverse array of clients. At the beginning of 2023, a new owner took control of the company and the vision no longer aligned with mine, so I decided to branch off. I opened Amped Advertising at the end of 2023 and could not be happier with that decision. I chose Amped as it means full of energy and excited and that is what one gets working with me as I am always amped (see what I did there?) about my clients’ projects. Amped also gives a little nod to my rock n roll side as I have a great love of music, especially the rock music from the late 1980s.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part, it was smooth. I think the main struggle I dealt with was completing all the paperwork to become certified as a small, woman-owned business. It is a long, tedious process, but very much worth it.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I really listen to my clients and what their needs are for every project. It brings me great joy seeing my clients’ visions come to life. One that I am most proud of is that I got to print shirts for Jack Russell’s Great White. Jack was the original lead singer for the band, Great White, and when they disbanded in 2010, there became two versions of the band, Great White and Jack Russell’s Great White. I first met Jack in 2008 as I was the Communications Manager for the Tawn Mastrey Foundation (fights Hep C) and my role was to talk to Tawn’s rockstar friends. During the time the foundation was active, I actually became friends with some of the rockstars I used to have posters of hanging on my walls as a young teenager in the 80s. One of those stars was Jack Russell. He became like an uncle to me and even lovingly called me kiddo. For several years, I would talk to the band to see if they would order any apparel or merch from me. To my absolute joy, I was asked to print the shirts for their show on March 9, 2024 at the Medina Ballroom in MN. Prior to the final printing of the shirts, I was asked to send one without the back tour dates printed so Jack could approve the print, which he did. I even was asked to work the merch table for the band at that show. It was so fun to interact with the fans in that way as well as pop in to the side stage to see them perform. After the show, while hanging with the band in the greenroom, Jack gave me back that sample shirt I sent. To my surprise, the back of the shirt had been signed. The top read “To Angela, Thanks for always being there. Love, Jack” and the rest of the band signed it as well. That would end up being the last show in MN since just a few months later, Jack Russell passed away from complications associated with Lewy Body Dementia. I feel greatly honored to have had that opportunity to work with him as I did.

In terms of setting me apart from others is that I like to say you get an Angela when you work with me! I absolutely love what I do and love seeing my clients shine.

What makes you happy?
Bringing joy to others makes me happy. Sometimes a simple smile can make the world of difference in someone’s life. I love bringing my clients’ visions to life on apparel, swag and items. I enjoy much time traveling with my husband and love going anywhere that is warm and is near water. We spend as much time from May to October at our lake place in northern MN. Music and seeing live concerts makes me very happy as well. When the majority of the bands I love were in their heyday, I was too young to go to the shows. I am making up for that in my adulthood. I also am so happy being a member of Polka Dot Powerhouse, which is an incredible connection company for women.
